Tennant is done filming, Smith to start in a month and more (SPOILERS)

I saw this on io9. Sounds like Tennant has completed his stint as the Tenth Doctor and Matt Smith is set to start filming in a month. There are a few vague details about the regeneration and more below...

Doctor Who:
David Tennant has finished filming his stint as the time-traveling weirdo whom we all love. And he was heard to remark something on the set about being like "an uncool Spider-Man." Did he mean that the Doctor was climbing walls or kissing upside-down in his final scenes? Or was he referring to one of the many comics where Spidey drops acid and has weird Spider-themed head trips? Or something else? Also, apparently Matt Smith starts filming in about a month, which means only one thing — more set reports. (Well, it also means they'll be making some television, I suppose.)

Also, Russell T. Davies tells the BBC the next special episode, "The Waters Of Mars," will air in November-ish. And he hints that the Tennant-Smith regeneration may be "a lot more complicated" than just one Doctor turning into the other — "We've got a lot more tricks up our sleeve." [Planet Gallifrey]

"A few tricks up our sleeve"? Perhaps something to do with 10.5? Another weird Fourth Doctor/Watcher type of regeneration? Maybe he trips over a brick face down and when he's flipped over he turns into Matt Smith?

I hope they don't get too "creative," just so they can bring back Tennant at some later time. One Doctor at a time is enough.

Never mind The Two Doctors, The Three Doctors, The Five Doctors, "Time Crash"...

Those very specials, and one does not need to keep Tennant Dr. alive or "whatever" for that type of show, charity or otherwise.

If the rumors of a Doctor Who movie written by RTD and starring Tennant are true, then they may well get creative for one simple reason.

If the goal is to launch a Doctor Who film franchise, then it's to the BBC's benefit to leave Tennant's era on television open-ended enough for a series of films to fit without fans working their knickers into a twist making them fit.

um, but isnt that how fans like it?

I got annonyed with theDoctor took June as a one shot companion back to ancient Greece in the book "The Slitheen Excursion", despite the fact that the TV series was clearly suggesting that he did not want to have a companion.

my point, if the BBC leaves it open ended, then the fans wont have anything to argue & bitch about, and if the fans dont have that, then what would be the point of the show, the internet, and how would they know who is the biggest fan, the biggest fan logically being the person who bitches & complains the most.

^Like we could never not find something to bitch about

and if not we can just pass the time, discussing who we think should be the next Doctor, who our Mancrush is, trying to put all the Doctor Who, Torchwood & Sarah Jane episodes in to Whoverse date order, and should we get bored of that, we can do what Trekkies do, and make a Doctor Who fanseries, to give us something to bitch about.

Re: Tennant is done filming, Smith to start in a month and more (SPOIL

Wamdue, there's a more basic reason for leaving Tennant's era open-ended if the BBC is planning a (series of) movie(s) with Tennant's Doctor.

Drama.

If we know how Tennant's Doctor's life ends, because we've seen it on television, then his character will never ever really be in jeopardy in a film. Some of the drama is drained right out of the film, because the main character can never really be hurt if the story has to fit in-between something else.

To maintain the dramatic potential for a film, they would have to leave Tennant's tenure on-screen somewhat ambiguous to how it ends.

I'm sure they're going to find a way of providing a sense of closure to Tennant's era in the final special, but I'm not convinced that means regeneration. Doctor Who Magazine found closure for the eighth Doctor's era in The Flood (which was meant as the regeneration story to the ninth Doctor), and BBC Books found a very different closure in The Gallifrey Chronicles. Neither of these stories were regeneration stories in the end, but they did serve as endings.

Maybe there will be a regeneration, and it will be definitive. But maybe there won't be. If there is to be a movie, it needs to be cagey.

maybe that is why donna comes back into the picture.

I don't know-- I don't see RTD buying into that logic, or agreeing to shape the biggest single event of his five years as executive producer for the sake of a still-hypothetical movie a long way down the road. Plus there's a greater potential for problems with the BBC Charter if they take that route.

BTW, according to the entertainment section of my local newspaper last weekend, DT is going to be the new host for PBS' Masterpiece Theater this coming season.

As for Smith...well, I guess this means we'll be seeing pictures of him in his new costume at last. I'm already in the habit of checking OG and here every day to see if there's any news on that front. I'm such a nerd that way.

Glad its not just me

Re: Tennant is done filming, Smith to start in a month and more (SPOIL

the problem I have with a non regeneration story, is it will lead to the theory that Matt Smith is not really the Doctor, I think we do need some sort of regeneration, again I know its a fantheory, but an aged 10th Doctor allows plenty of room for further adventures

Yes, he needs a clean break and to be a totally legitimate Doctor. The last thing he needs is David Tennant peeking out of the upstairs window like some Paisley-born Margaret Thatcher. Moffatt probably doesn't need RTD doing likewise with a movie.

What they should do is

*New companion is on the phone with her dad*

Companion-I left my keys on that ledge there okay? got to go really got to go. Excuse me sir, when this old man arrives can you tell him I left my keys over there?

*person nods*
*companion leaves*

*The person turns to face to camera and it's Tennant! who walks away and fades*
:techman:

I totally agree, a clean break from Tennant to Smith is what is needed here, if they have a multi Doctor story (for example) in the first series, viewers will be all "oh I cant wait for Tennant to return" and not be focusing on how brillant the new Doctor is

Re: Tennant is done filming, Smith to start in a month and more (SPOIL

By that logic, because we didn't have a regeneration from McGann to Eccleston, then Eccleston isn't really the Doctor? Or because we didn't have a regeneration from Chris Baker into William Hartnell then Hartnell isn't really the Doctor? But because we had a regeneration from, say, Rowan Atkinson into Richard E. Grant, then Grant is really the Doctor?

To be honest, I see a lot of appeal in starting Matt Smith's era like Eccleston's era. He's been in his body for a while, he's not dealing with the detritus of regeneration, and he's comfortable. There are advantages to starting with a clean break from the past.

Who the fuck is "Chris Baker"??
