Rebooted Miranda Class...

A bit late, but here is a design that is somewhat Reliant esque that could be JJ'ed...

Whoa, that's cool. :) It's actually pretty close to that one ship we see, right before they all go to warp.

Well, I got the Rollbar and Pylons worked out... but I'm fixing to make a change, and hopefully it won't be too controversial. :) I was thinking about moving the impulse engines up to the Roll bar... I was thinking that right in the middle of the shuttle bays might not be the best idea for a shuttle pilot. :)

My other idea was making a small, underslung impulse engine, separate from the hull. What do you guys think?

I'd go with the underslung engines especially if they are half embedded in the lower section of the hull. That would allow for access tunnels between the two shuttle bays so that shuttles (or dare I say fighters/strikecraft) could recover in one bay, be refitted on the move, and launched from the other. It would also allow for retaining the rollbar and the potential for weapons, tractor beams, etc. there.

Yeah, I'm going to have the Pod doing both things though... Weapons in the front, Impluse in the back. That preserves the crossways between the shuttlebay hulls...

It also keeps the impulse engine directly connected to the warp nacelles. :)

That would work. We've seen that pop-up point defense systems have been used by the nuStarfleet, so losing the aft weapons in the roll bar isn't that big of a problem. You could have a few weapons systems to cover the shuttles and a tube or two to scare off bigger game.

Yep, that's an Idea I just had. I'll put rear torpedo tubes in between the Shuttlebays, and some rear phasers there on the bottom. :)

Sounds like you have a ship meant to go in harm's way, be it from strange new worlds or new lifeforms.

It also looks like something designed to tangle with a supersized ship with advanced weaponry, such as the Narada. I'm contemplating a short story that would explain how fear over the presence of this ship (whose purpose and allegiance were unknown but whose capabilities were all too clear) as much as the presence of the ship itself drove the changes we see in STXI.

Well, the original Miranda class seemed to be more of a military vessel anyway... It was more heavily armed than Enterprise, and had 2 shuttlebays. I think this one I'm building will have similar capabilities...

Agreed. With any luck, if they do a remake of TWOT, Kirk will figure out that it doesn't matter how happy the fleet is, having a heavily armed warship heading your way that won't talk to you is grounds for at least taking some precautions.

True. :)

Here's some more progress...

I got the new hulls built, and got the pod figured out. I'll have some more details of course, but I think that most of the main structures are working...

Also, I think I like the impulse engine up top like that. :)

I like this ship! It's exciting!

Sheesh, I go out of town over night and Madman1701 goes running ahead with my suggestion. I am honored! Looks great btw!:bolian:

Concerning rear-firing torps:

I never understood why these were needed. In our era, most submarines only carry forward firing torps because of the guidance systems (wire or independent) that they carry to help the torps find their targets. How much more advanced will we be then?! Further, if a wet-navy sub can fire a torpedo forward to hit a target aft, given water resistance, etc., how much moreso can a starship!

I used to be a huge fan of rear torps, but now I don't care for them. Rear phasers, though, now that's a winner!

yeah, going on where I am now, I just put 2 forward firing tubes, and it's got rear MegaPhasers. :)

You'll see what I mean. :)

Well, when you consider the speeds involved with starships and the resulting turn radii, yeah, rear firing torps start to make sense.

Firing it from the front of the ship just imparts unwanted velocity in the wrong direction. So not only do we have to kill velocity that we didn't need we also have to consume the power to do it.

I of course bypassed the whole issue on my Seattle class by mounting the torps at the lowest point and making them rotatable on the z access 180 degrees inorder to fire forward or backwards.

Firing to the subs in possible in theory but I don't believe it's considered as a realistic tactic. If the torpedo turns opposite to the sub's direction, the wire (which is the principal source of guidance) will most likely snap. If it somehow holds together, it will run out far quicker than normal and thus cut the range in which the torp can be guided over (the wire providing up to date information that allows the internal guidance system to be more accurate). If you are shooting to the rear in a sub, something major has gone wrong.

Well, I made it as far as I am going to this afternoon. :) I made so much progress, I almost can't believe it....

Detailing is 90% done... I'm ready to start texturing, too. :) By the time I have new images, I bet the name will be on there. :) I'll make a Miranda one, and a Reliant one. :)

HOLY CRAP MADMAN!

I think this is one of the best models you have made. And I'm loving the way it's looking. Can't wait to see it with textures and all.

Then maybe some images of it confronting the Enterprise? :bolian:

I have a feeling your going to be playing with these models for QUITE some time.

Now i have to get my act together and work on my modeling skills to where i get as good as you. Doubt that will happen but we'll see. :guffaw:
