Chivalry: It's dead, Jim.

sidious618 - you're right. There is no getting through to people like Flux Capacitor, Lindley and An Officer. People who don't hold the exact same set of values as them are rude, discourteous and should walk to work. We get it.

NOT RUDE.

Poor choice of word....but your attempt to justify lack of courtesy by saying that others are more uncourteous is still baffling.

Wrong.

No, I'm pretty sure I'm right about it being baffling. Whether I've enunciated my thoughts clearly is up for debate, but the underlying reaction to your arguments is pretty clear to me.

First of all, there is nothing discourteous about taking a seat for yourself when you got to it first.

Discourtesy is something active, and I'll agree that failing to give up a seat isn't actively rude. However, it isn't courteous, either. It's just nothing. That's what I was trying to convey with the "un-" prefix.

I was done with this discussion after my first reply. Unfortunately, you and An Officer decided to make it a personal discussion. You blew it out of all proportion.?

So now you're trying to shrug off responsibility for your role here?

I get that you don't like to be disagreed with, no one does. But take some responsibility for what you've said!

Am I wrong ?

Sure, uncourtesy is a perfectly cromulent word.

Why ? All I've had here is An Officer blathering on about my supposed lack of a sense of humour - like she knows me at all - and you endlessly restating things you know I disagree with as if doing so will make them true.

As for not liking it when I'm disagreed with, re-read your own posts in this thread.

There's nothing to be gained by continuing this.

Honestly, I think your attitude on the matter sucks, but it's yours to have. There are worse things to be intransigent about I guess.

His attitude sucks. Really? That's precious.

Now we all know that Hermiod can be very opinionated, often to a fault. But the personal attacks leveled against him and those that agree with him have been uncalled for. Let's review. He, and those who agree with him, have been called:

-Classless
-Ignorant
-Hateful
-Disrespectful
-Losers
-Dateless
-Lazy
-Mean
-Mysoginist

And that's just off the top of my head.

Don't forget humourless!

I need to put that list in my sig. Get it out of the way so I can actually discuss whatever subject is at hand for a change instead of dealing with straw man arguments.

Quotes please. I don't recollect any of those words being used against you in the way you've described. It's okay to be argumentative, it not okay to make things up.

Ah, yes, now that your behavior has been called into question we're all business.

Pfft. Names have been thrown at both sides all through this thread.
Silly, hyperbolic, disproportionate names.

Let's see, just for starters. Cynical, self-centered, dateless, whining, sexist, dateless again, classless, no experience with women, illiterate, whining again, classless again, "catty", bitter, cynical, lacking in manners, more illiteracy and so on and so on.

That was gathered from the first seven pages. I'm also lazy, apparently, so I didn't go through the rest.

Oh yeah, and we're also dicks. And stealth trolls, professional whingers, lack sufficient respect for women, ill humoured, beyond help...

Guys, we're getting away from the point of the thread.

I think we can sum up what the two POVs are and at this junction we may as well leave it at that as we're getting no where fast.

1- Some view tradition as being fine and enjoy holding doors, giving up seats etc. for women.
2- Some view this tradition as sexist and do not decide to be kind simply because of gender. They are kind either all the time or when they would like to be.

Neither side is "classless" or "ignorant" here so let's cut that crap.

Honestly, I beg to differ on the classless part. Someone who holds a door for a woman/gives up his seat has more class in this particular regard. Hands down. So maybe not completely classless but....

So where are "Ignorant", "Hateful", "Disrespectful", "Loser", "Mean", and "Misogynistic"?

Suspiciously missing. It's fine if you think you're all those things, but don't say we said them.
