Stuff you simply LOVED...

Karl Urban did McCoy wonderfully. He was by far the closest of the bunch. Simon Pegg is good in anything he is in, although I don't think he got Mr. Scott down. But the poor bastard is isolated on a cold barren place, with no liquor, MRE's (which still taste like dogcrap in the 23rd Century) and a muppet for a companion that he loathed.

(I'll expand later)

Yes, I agree with you on McCoy I think Karl nailed him. I was very pleased he got it right since I was a fan of Karl since his Xena/Herc days. I was really worried if he could pull it off... he was amazing.

And for Scotty... you know he was the one character who bothered me. I don't know why, I didn't like the snipes at the little alien, just seemed too much for Scotty, I don't remember he being overtly nasty.

And James Doohan is Scotty to me, so I guess that was just too hard to let go of. But then again, I loved Zach as Spock and Chris as Kirk so... I don't know, maybe Scotty will be more likeable next time. Could have been the script.

End credits were amazing!

Also, the moment George Kirk died and all the popcorn munchers stopped munching at once, it was priceless.

Back from seeing it the 2nd time.

Loved the NCC 1701 reveal as Mc Coy and Kirk's shuttle left. Guess it takes over 3 years to build a starship, eh?

Loved Chekov's brief about the mission to "Woolkin" and the possible "ewakuations."

I didn't see Scotty's attitude to the little alien as nasty, just exasperated. Scotty couldn't have really hated him or he wouldn't have been on the Enterprise at the end!

[Scotty] Get down! [/Scotty]

Guess being marooned together for 6 months would drive both of you crazy. And he did tear up when Scotty beamed out.

Oh, and "You've got numb tongue? I can fix that!" :rommie:

Nasty might be too strong of a word... I guess they were going for comic relief, but I felt sorry for the little guy.

I am hoping Simon is better in the next film, I've heard he's a good actor.

I loved that whole scene!

He kept shooting him up with stuff, and Kirk yelling STOP THAT!

Finally, an explanation of why Kirk always avoids his medicals!

He is a very good actor, but there probably won't be much of a change to that attitude - it's a very British friendship set-up, on the surface he's annoyed to have Keenser around, but really he wouldn't know how to be without him any more.

-George Kirk's death. Everybody I was with was in tears.
-"Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a physicist!"
-Pretty much all of McCoy's lines.
-The scene where Kirk tries to get an emotional response out of Spock.
-Spock.
-The fact that there was no real romantic entaglement that had a direct bearing on the story at hand.
-The casting.
-The music.
-The film!

Very good point! It was nice to have a movie not centred around a damsel of the hour who gets in distress for our heroic Captain to rescue.

Exactly. I went to see Cloverfield when it was out, and thought it was amazing except for the whole "We've gotta find Beth!" thing.

If the whole of STXI had been Spock/Uhura orientated it would have turned it into just yet another Hollywood film. The fact that it was based on friendship and teamwork is what makes it stand apart.

Spock fans will also want the audio book, read by Zach Quinto. Seven CD's with nothing but glorious Quinto voice on them.

O_O

Oh, my.

There were a number of things I liked in the movie, even though for the most part I think very dimly of the movie...

- The new Chris Pike was a far better Captain than the original. He seemed like a much more solid leader. Being female, I also thought he the actor was also a much better looking individual (though Chris Pike was originally a much younger individual)

- The Karl Urban got McCoy down pat!

- Zach Quinto played Spock quite well for the most part.

- The scene when a person got sucked out into space on the Kelvin and you heard the screaming go silent. Good detail there -- there's no noise in space.

- The fact that there were a number of other Federation vessels other than the Enterprise. During TOS it was really annoying that it seemed that the Constitution class was the only ship ever seen other than like the Botany Bay. Still I don't particularly like the design of most of the ships anyway, but that's a different issue.

I've seen the film five times now, once on IMAX, and I still enjoyed it thoroughly each time. During the last viewing, one thing in particular jumped out at me that I didn't notice before.

The bit on the Jellyfish between Spock and Kirk when Spock calls him "Jim" for the first time. It was as if, in spite of all that they had between them thus far, in the heat of the moment, we got the first true glimpse of the Kirk/Spock friendship in full force. Spock quotes the likelihood of success and Kirk just exudes pure-Kirk confidence that the plan will work. Great, great moment that kind of slipped by me the first few times.

In addition, I loved:

Everything about the Kelvin sequence. I nearly cried the first two times I saw Kirk's birth.

The limited use of obvious soundstages. The drill fight could easily have been inside a stage and lit with artificial lighting, but they did that part outside for the natural lighting and it showed big time.

Scotty. Yes, he was comic relief and he got some great lines in, but they didn't dumb him down or make the comedy come at the expense of his character. He was funny, but not made fun of.

The transporters. Yes, yes, yes! Make transporting seem difficult and dangerous again! It takes skill to operate a transporter...not just punching buttons and letting the computer do the work. Makes it a much more dramatic device and less of a cop-out.

I could go on and on, but those are the big ones to me...casting, effects, little details...these were all great as well...

I forgot about that until you mentioned it, but yes. I thought that too, it was very eerie actually, how there was a scream and then total silence.

Yes.. that scene got a small internal fistpump from me when i saw it. It was the first true sign that they were bonding. A small detail yet very satisfying.

Scotty.. i loved Simon Pegg's portrayal of him. He had a bit more energy to him than Doohan's version but i liked it. He was very intelligent as shown by old Spock and being respected by Spock is quite some feat. He's just this gruff character who treats his alien friend supposedly like crap but underneath you know it's not meant in a bad way. I guess that little dude did more than his share to piss off Scotty during their 6 months but they grew on each other. And i absolutely adored the accent!:lol:

I agree - I love that he is clearly a great engineer as well as the jokes.

Yes, the fact that it takes real skill to operate a transporter with pin-point accuracy - that really worked for me.

Well, this is from the novel, but I love how Kirk is almost resigned to being a delinquent for the rest of his life. When he's pulling up to the shipyard, part of himself keeps saying he's an overage delinquent who Starfleet would never want.

And when Mc Coy is being dragged out of the 'loo on the shuttle, Kirk reflects that he's had that tone of resignation when being hauled in front of a judge.

It really gives an insight into how Kirk is fighting what his stepfather/ uncle said to him to beat him down and what he had to fight internally.

"I am from the future"

Pause.

"Bullshit."
This was the first time everyone in the theater laughed out loud! :guffaw:
The scene between Spock and his mother is perhaps my favourite.
This brought me back to "Journey to Babel" and TVH. It was a very good moment.
Some additions:

I agree with several others about enjoying Pike's last scene. He still ends up in a wheelchair, but he remains a capable and dignified officer - a vast improvement really from his fate in TOS.
That TMP uniform is my favorite from TMP. Pike in the wheelchair paid homage to the original, but now there is hope he won't stay in that chair. I have to admit, I was thinking about the canonistas flipping out now that Pike skips Fleet Captain and is promoted to Admiral.
I also liked the scenes of Kirk having symptoms from McCoy's conconctions. It was quite funny and well acted.
Agreed. It was so much like the original humor from TOS.

"In space, no one can hear you scream..."

There were so many moments, it becomes overwhelming when I try to sit and think about which to include. I would end up recounting the entire movie.
Scotty's friend, Keenser, reminds me of JarJar Binks. I also missed the tribble, so I will have to look for it next time.

I noticed them laughing out loud when Kirk, a little deflated, asks the Orion girl just how many guys she had brought back to her room...
