Maybe Sarek was hanging out at the local Earth library where Amanda was working... when Pon Farr struck.

Leila Kalomi said to Spock at their "breakup scene" -- "We could have nothing on Earth -- you couldn't even put your arms around me...". It was obviously not physical and Spock's emotions were not displayed. She may have suspected he had feelings, but he always denied he even had them them in TOS.
Having just rewatched those eps in the weeks before the movie I was surprised at how flirtatious it came across. Interesting how Uhura never flirts with any one else.
Your point is well taken though, Spock was the target of a lot of ribbing.
Uhura never flirted with anyone else because all the rest of them would take her up on it!! Can you imagine how fast Kirk would respond? She could flirt with Spock because he was "safe". Notice the one who really has the hots for him - Chapel, she doesn't tease or flirt, she just goes to pieces every time he is around (like Patsy Cline)
I liked the scene; but some have said it seemed maybe out of character or jarring. So the book gives more detail for them.I read the turbolift Spock/Uhura scene in the book, but it just didn't come across as well as in the movie.
Not nearly as well.
In the movie, the scene is made more powerful through its simplicity.
I'm not much of a romance buff, but even I was moved. Really solid acting.
Considering the things that happened to the Spock of this alternate universe, i.e. world is destroyed and mother is killed, I didn't find his scenes with Uhura out of character...yes even the scene on the transporter platform.
wern't they scheduled to have a grudge against each other for years...
*The "worse" part is that I ended up marrying a man who is very much like Spock - not only physically (though better-looking than Nimoy), but in terms of education and demeanor. There are some negatives to being involved with someone who is often emotionally detached. If the writers ever needed examples to write realistically about the difficulties a Spock/Uhura relationship might entail, they can call me up! (It still doesn't make me not love Spock, though!).

Now now.. Kirk was too professional for that. He DID have some flirtations and dancing with Helen Noel at a Christmas party but did anything more serious happen? I'm not too sure. However Janice Rand has been mooning at him for years and he is very careful to not give her any encouragement. I do not think he'd respond to Uhura flirting with him.
Not sure what the chain of command rules with relationships are in Starfleet. Would it have been inappropriate for TOS Spock to take up with Uhura? If that is verboten than I do see it as more likely to be ribbing, especially as Uhura flirted with him in public.
^^^ Great post maryh.
I still like what was done with Spock and Uhura in this movie though. Now to make your points, the movie witers have a great oppurtunity to reveal the consequences of their relationship in the next movie. I believe they should show Spock having a very difficult time with it.

Sounds like Peyton Place in Outerspace.
