I was stunned by how average the movie was.

Also, if they ever come up with another good Trek movie villain again, I'll be amazed. The last semi-decent one was Soran. Even he was just another "pissed off because he lost something" guy but without the now-obligatory "scary spaceship".

Ben Cross and Bruce Greenwood were good casting. Winona Ryder was a big *shrug*.

How could Vulcan be a black hole now and not suck Delta Vega in? Or am I missing something.

Old Spock should the crew cliff notes. Don't wake the sleepers on Botany Bay. Save some humpback whales or recreate them. Important stuff.

    Nice effort. Mediocre movie.

You reduce any scene of any movie to that simple and stupid of terms, and yeah it's gonna sound pretty bad.

It does make it more satisfying to sit back and enjoy it knowing someone is frothing about not enjoying on the boards. Not sure why, perhaps knowing that you're not the one missing out on anything.

Actually for me I had the opposite experience. The first time through everything was coming hard and fast at me that I really didn't see the number of problems but the second time through only served to heighten the issues I had the first time through.

If I could go back and change my initial rating I would lower it from Above Average to Average. Flashy effects and rapid pacing can cover up some sins but not when they are so pervasive and annoying.

Benefit of all of my friends knowing I'm a Trekkie? All of my non-Trek fans are asking me to go with them. I have my third showing tonight, a potential fourth showing tomorrow, and at least one more some point after that. This is the single most I've ever seen one movie in the theaters. And I'm loving every minute of it. :D

To all those that are calling the movie dumb, what trek movie isn't dumb in some way to you then? Going by the standards many seem to be holding Star Trek to I can't see how they like any Trek movies.

And Neopeius it is nowhere near as low brow as you are implying it to be.

I just call it as I see it. Why couldn't GIANT SHIP squash the little, slow shuttlecraft? Why couldn't GIANT SHIP destroy the Kelvin before it hit. And if the answer is that it didn't matter if the Kelvin hit or not, why couldn't the GIANT SHIP squash the little, slow shuttlecraft?

And Captain Robau, genius that he is, why didn't he order "WARP AWAY" before "ARM WEAPONS"?

For that matter, why didn't Pike?

Actually, I think I know the reason why. Federation ships in NuTrek can't actually *move*. This is why, after the six ships crewed by cadets (!) were destroyed, their hulks were all still in one damned place for the Enterprise to dodge around when it got out of hyperspace.

    Stupid movie.

As a rule, I don't much care for the other Trek movies either. I could draw a straight line through TWOK to NEM to NuTrek. Mistakes compounding on mistakes.

I haven't implied anything. I've out and out said it's a dumb movie.

Well from watching the movie it seems as if George Kirk was occupying the Narada while the shuttles made good their escape, hence that touching little scene between him and his wife with child, you saw that right? Also it seemed to me that the Kelvin was getting the snot blasted out of it as it was ramming the Narada, so yeah, what's the problem?

Well when a ship appears out of nowhere and starts knocking your ship around, you might not have time to run away. The result would have been the same anyway, the Narada was much quicker ship than the Kelvin. So why complain. As for Pike, well he kind of had a mission and a planet at stake.
    Serious issues my man.

So anything after TMP in other words is a crappy Trek movie? I'm amazed you even bothered watching any of the other movies then.

You are right about that, my apologies.

TVH was fun, if frivolous. FC was enjoyable largely because it took itself out of the Trek universe and had a really cool zero-g battle in it.

But on the whole, yeah, crappy movies. :) And TMP wasn't that good, either.

The Kelvin provided cover for the launching shuttles by shooting down the Narada's torpedoes and then crippled the ship in a kamikaze run so the shuttles could make their escape. It's clearer on the big screen.

I've got my criticisms of the film, but I thought the opening sequence was fab.

also, maybe the Narada was just overextended.

    I swear, no pun intended.

So, the Narada was able to utterly mangle the Kelvin in a quick barrage.. yet for SIXTY SECONDS, it was unable to blow up a crippled ship moving at Mach... 0.5?

And then it couldn't just freaking run over the shuttlecraft which could be seen in the same frame as the Narada suggesting they were only a few miles apart?

I just saw the movie again.

After the collision with the Kelvin, the Narada is listing and drifting clearly out of control, with a considerable debris cloud between it and the escaping shuttle fleet.

The writers have said that what got dropped from the movie is that the Narada is so severely damaged in this attack that the Klingons are able to capture its crew.

Maybe Nero wanted the shuttlecraft to get away.

    Who cares why?

Point is that George Kirk was a hero that saved many lives while sacrificing his own.

If anyone didn't get that after watching it, and then again after it was explained by Pike, then maybe it's the viewer that's stupid and not the movie.
