So WHEN Do We Officially Hear About The Sequel?!?

This is a little strange because usually, by now, there is an official announcement about a sequel. The film is doing gangbusters and has exceeded all expectations(even mine).

When should we expect to hear? And no, for all the n00bs, the mention of the writers starting work on a script a few weeks back is NOT an official announcement from Paramount that there WILL be a sequel.

So when do we expect to hear that the next film has been greenlit?

That's the thing - if there had been an OFFICIAL announcement(rather than from the janitor's sister's gardener), it would be all over AICN and all the other usual haunts, not to mention we'd have four million threads here discussing potential storylines.

I have yet to read anything official.

I was referring to the report on AICN a month back that said the writers had started on the script. I just wanted people to realize that that was NOT official word, yet.

I read that they have already started writing the script for the new film, which I think will be better than this one as all the set up of the characters is over with.

Yes, now that the characters re-introduction have been done we may get a better storyline. Maybe something closer to what Trek is about with better drama, exploration/mystery and/or social commentary.

I was at the screenin' where the writers announced that they were workin' on the sequel already, so it ain't like AICN pulled the report out of Harry's fat ass.

Well there is a lot less work involved getting a sequel to the screen. Unless Paramount have been monumentally stupid, the sets are in storage ready to go, the CGI models are finished for the hero ship and the costumes are done. So i wouldnt be surprised to see a sequel within two years.

Here's a Variety story from a month-and-a-half ago that states Kurtzman and Orci were hired to submit a script for the sequel -- although getting a script commissioned is only a first step, and I don't think it has been officially "greenlit" yet.

I'm not an expert in this sort of thing, but it seems a bit too early to "greenlight" a sequel anyway --- the movie just opened a week ago. They can greenlight this sometime early next year, film it through the mid- to late-2010, and have post-production done in late 2010 to early 2011 for a summer 2011 release.

I'd be very suprised if they make a formal announcement anytime soon (beyond the previous formal announcement of commissioning a script). There's plenty of time.
