USS Fardell's brief review

I saw the movie last Saturday (and it has taken this long to get through the amount of the thread that was posted prior to last Saturday) and I found it FANTASTIC!

The Kelvin sequence
I enjoyed this, it provides an excellent introduction to the film.


Product placement with young Kirk
What product placement? It did not break my suspension of disbelief to see a Nokia communications system in that antique car.

(As for Alternate Universes: I would think that the universe that the Nerada and Nimoy-Spock came from and where Romulus was destroyed may not be the Original-canon Trekverse; and thus there may not be a WWIII in the past of this universe; thus the existance of Nokia is not contradictory.)


The Kobayashi Maru Test
This is done well, I enjoyed the way that Kirk behaved in it.

This introduces a major change to this version of Star Trek compared to the previous one. I would like to know where they go with this.


The rest of the Movie

Overall it was really well done. I give it a 9/10.

There may be a fuller review after I have watched it a second time.

 

Certain people and specific threads aside, it is very, very, very difficult for me to become offended or angry, particularly when someone is making a joke. You have nothing to worry about.

Just caught it last night and I'm not about to wade through 92 odd posts first before making mine, so forgive me if this has all been said before.

The film cuts to the chase, to what makes Star Trek, when it's good, so enjoyable. It's nothing more complicated than honest to goodness fun. It's that simple and I had a hoot when I was watching. Pine, Quinto, Urban et al help no end by being entirely likeable and well suited to their roles.

There are one or two forgettable bits, the plot holes, coincidences and slightly jerky camera work which is forgivable on the small screen (nuBSG for example) but less so on the big screen.

But I pay that no mind, the scope and scale of the film make up for it all. I know, Kirk going from belligerent young adult to captain in three years is a bit much for some viewers, but for me it worked just fine. Yeah, this is Trek lite, for a new (the next?) generation. But the actors played their roles well and what might have annoyed me if I was in the mood to pause, rewind and watch again just didn't get a chance to.

As an aside, I like the back references to TOS and its movies, Pike in a wheelchair again, wearing what seems to be a TMP uniform, Kirk crunching down on an apple during the Kobayashi Maru and more.

Another aside, how ironic that this time around Winona Ryder is playing someone much older than she actually is.

 

Was just watching CMT (Country Music Television), and it would seem Paramount is pulling out all the stops to get this movie advertised. CMT just had 2 in-show promotions for the movie... not even commercials, they had the top-20 show host pushing the movie. Kinda neat to see.

 

hmm... I think I saw you get angry a couple of times in TNZ during election season last year. besides, you're kinda sexy when you're angry, John.

No, not at all. At least not for me.

This, first and foremost, was a story of Kirk and Spock finding their own way, and in the process finding each other.

The whole whole revenge thing is just a plot device that is secondary to help further along the main story.

This was a Kirk-Spock story and that is why the movie succeeded so well as "Star Trek".

 

But only in the most shallow superficial way. I would argue the McCoy/Kirk friendship was many magnitudes better in its execution. How many scenes did we actually get between Kirk and Spock?

I'm really beginning to think modern entertainment simply isn't for me. Maybe I should just stick to stuff pre-dating the '00s.

 

I actually tried to read all 92 pages...honest. I have to say I thought the movie was excellent. The cast was outstanding. I was worried about them taking on these iconic rolls, but they pulled it off wonderfully.

I loved the space battles with the pulse phase canons(I'm taking a wild guess at what they are called) the ones shooting the torpedoes. That scene with the Enterprise coming out of warp all guns blazing was just amazing.

The best thing I can say for any movie is that I was entertained and that I had fun and this movie was both.

 

Oh yes, for sure. The "Kirk and Spock finding each other" was indeed minimal. The main character focus was on Kirk and Spock finding their own way.

Again, having kirk and Spock not knowing each other through most of the movie was great. I'm glad that was minimised. The journey was on a more personal level for both Kirk and Spock.

Now, the next movie can more fully explore the burgeoning relationship that is so famous. I''m looking forward to it. Especially since the new timeline can extinguish any preconceived expectations.

Even the Spock-McCoy relationship was barely hinted at. Again, wait till next movie!

 

Umm...Continuity was not destroyed. It still exists.

We've just been introduced to another timeline.

Only the Narada and Spock's ship disappeared from the prime timeline. Their universe was not destroyed (although Romulus was). Their timeline/universe still exists.

Just saw it for the third time. It was even better than the first and second time combined! What a fantastic movie!

 

I absolutely loved it. Sure, it wasn't perfect story-wise, but the rest was so awesome I don't fell a need to nitpick ... So, excellent from me.

 

I just got home from seeing Angels & Demons, the cinema was busier than I've seen it in a long time, but more people seemed to be seeing Star Trek than A&D, Even saw a couple of showings were close to sold out.

 

You disagree with the characterization or just the fact that I thought the movie was dumb?

 

I liked it alot the first time. I just saw it a second time and it was MUCH BETTER. I highly recommend a second viewing for anyone on the fence about the film. It gets better on repeated viewings.
