Re: Will Trek XII be like 'The Dark Knight' or... 'Quantum Of Solace'.

firefox, you didn't read the original post, it appears. This is about Star Trek Twelve and whether it will be more comparable in quality to the Bond or the Batman sequel.

Me, I don't know. As a matter of fact, I didn't expect STXI to do as well as it's doing, neither commercially nor critically. Certainly not the high praise it's getting. And I didn't expect The Dark Knight to shatter every box office record in sight - or go on to take 2 Oscars home. So who knows how they'll surprise us next time... Only thing I hope for is that the next film will in no way, shape or form include Khan.

Re: Will Trek XII be like 'The Dark Knight' or... 'Quantum Of Solace'.

Hmmm.... we have at least two years to go before STXII, and we're already trying to predict what it will be like.

There are only two things we know about Trek 12, that it will be written by the same team and star the same leads. How on Earth can we predict anything from that!?

Re: Will Trek XII be like 'The Dark Knight' or... 'Quantum Of Solace'.

It'll be more like "Quantum Knight".

Or "Dark Solace." I haven't decided yet.

Maybe because it's interesting to speculate..?

Re: Will Trek XII be like 'The Dark Knight' or... 'Quantum Of Solace'.

Speculation would regard plot details, character developments, etc.

To muse over whether or not the film will be good in quality is solely a guessing game.

Re: Will Trek XII be like 'The Dark Knight' or... 'Quantum Of Solace'.

Since "Batman Begins" sequel doesn't have the word "Batman" in its title, then it would probably be fitting that they do something similar with ST XII (throw out "Star Trek").
And since "Dark Knight" is basically Batman's nickname, should ST XII simply be called something like "The Final Frontier," "Enterprise," or "These Are The Voyages?"

Re: Will Trek XII be like 'The Dark Knight' or... 'Quantum Of Solace'.

The Dark Knight wasn't the title solely because it was his nickname - it also drew on plots elements from the movie, the tension between Batman's status as a hero to Gotham and as a vigilante operating outside of the law.

I like your premise but I have two concerns: (1) That the name chosen could have no real connection the plot of the movie, and (2) that it could end up alienating Trek core - much like "Enterprise" did.

The first film does set up several loose ends, so its possible to infer what the sequel may contain. Yes it doesnt guarantee anything, but they would be stupid not to follow up on what they have set up. I can see New Vulcan being a major part of the sequel.

I hope Khan is not involved, hell i'll be happy if he stays drifting out in space for eternity and the Botany Bay is never found. If they must use stuff from previous series/films, i'd like to see the Planet Killer. Give us a nemesis for the crew that isnt just a pissed off bad guy. My own version, would be New Vulcan being founded, and then the bloody Planet Killer turning up a few systems away. Lots of tension - how the Vulcans react to the prospect of losing their home again, who is behind it? Klingons? and hey maybe have Starfleet actually appear to be a competant organisation this time, instead of sending a fleet of cadets to combat a planetary emergency.

Re: What do you want to see/what actors in Star Trek XII?

You know what might be neat? A Cardassian movie. They're obviously known to our Starfleet friends. Could be interesting to see what they were up to in this century.
Geeez, didn't you have enough of Cardies in DS9?
Kinda, but this would be 100 years before that.

I'm mostly just trying to think of something familiar without completely rehashing ideas.

I mean, we could have a Klingon or a Romulan story. Or we could have another Big Bad Evil Something on its way to destroy Earth that our heroes have to stop. But why do something that's been done a thousand times already?

The Cardassians, while obviously explored in DS9, are a complete mystery in this time period. There has never been a TOS story about them, but this new movie shows that they are obviously known. Enough so that there is a drink named after them in the bar in the beginning.

Doesn't have to be Cardassians. I'm just throwing stuff out there. But it might be neat to see what they were up to in the 23rd Century (without it feeling contrived, like if they were to do a Borg movie or something).

The Cardassians were known to the Vulcans, at least, in the 22nd Century, as an exile, Iloja, lived on Vulcan during that time. The Cardassians of 23rd time are probably either friendly or neutral to the Federation, with a peaceful nonmilitary government, known primarily for its artists, composers, etc.

Re: What do you want to see/what actors in Star Trek XII?

Only thing I'd really like to see, for sure, are versions of Rand and Chapel.

Leave Old Spock out of this. The torch has been passed, greatly, bringing him back would only cheapen that.

Do you think the sequel will have "old" or "new" style Klingon makeup?

On the one hand, the "old" smooth forehead TOS style would make sense because it's more in line with "canon" for the era in which this new Star Trek is taking place.

However, in the minds of many people, Klingons are now more associated with the newer ridged forehead style because it's gotten much more coverage in the movies and the other TV series.

So what do you think will happen and what do you want to happen?

Re: Do you think the sequel will have "old" or "new" style Klingon mak

ST:ENT explained that human-looking Klingon are the result of a virus engineered while playing with human augment dna, essentially making it a contagious plague. There is not reason to beleive 100% of the population would be affected, but they should definitly appear (if Klingon are more than a reference as it was in this movie).

Re: Do you think the sequel will have "old" or "new" style Klingon mak

Personally, I want the new style ridges. The way the old makeup was described by ENT and DS9 was certainly interesting for the Trekkies, but I don't think anyone else would care one bit and would just be like "so what, you guys couldn't afford makeup for these new aliens?"

Besides, its what even us Trekkies have come to know as Klingon - I find it silly to base "canon" on the fact that Roddenberry didn't have enough money to make proper Klingons back in the day.

Re: Do you think the sequel will have "old" or "new" style Klingon mak

It is possible that in this alternate reality the Klingons discovered how to cure their mutation earlier than in the other universe.

Not likely. The reality is exactly the same until the arrival of the Narada, and changes in continuity are impacted by this events. Even with butterfly effect, I think it is not likely. Not impossible, but very slim odds.

Re: Do you think the sequel will have "old" or "new" style Klingon mak

No Klingons, don''t use this species until they figure out how to write them properly. I want them to be more badass like the days they were more based on the Soviets or Mongolians

I'm not totally familiar with the Star Trek verse but IMO there were too many bad episodes because of what writers did to modern day klingons
:klingon:
the make-up, clothes, style etc is secondary for me, the most important issue is having a believable Klingon. Not some kamikaze guy obsessed with rituals and blood letting

Re: Do you think the sequel will have "old" or "new" style Klingon mak

Exactly. No Klingons until they come up with a way of making them cool instead of obnoxious, insufferable, moronic cardboard characters.
