Things you didn't like

Given what some of you people are bitching about, I'm beginning to wonder if you've EVER liked ANY Star Trek movie.

Come on, half the fun is picking the thing to pieces.

I've seen it three times and love the movie. It has flaws; it has mistakes; I hate the two destructions, but it was a very entertaining movie. It has moved into the 2nd-best Trek movie slot.

The Kelvin bit in the beginning, to me, was perfect. They just nailed that.

But they're complaining about time travel and other Kirk's unbelievable promotion amongst other things that have all appeared in other movies.

Yes, the instant promotion-thing annoyed me quite a bit as well - not only the one on Enterprise with Kirk as acting first officer, but also the one at the end. I mean, he *was* just a cadet at the beginning of the crisis. (But I'd have expected a quib at Pike at the end about the fact that it didn't take Kirk 8 years to have his own ship, but a mere 3.)

And that line of Nero's "Hello Christopher, I'm Nero." WTF? That just felt so off...

I wouldn't exactly say Lieutanant is a janitor. A promotion to Lieutenant would mean he would get to finish the academy one year early, AND get two promotions. Making that five promotions is just overdone. Besides, Kirk simply doesn't have any experience, of which you would surely need a lot as captain.

Star Trek is mythology.. picking it apart and demanding accuracy is like the Christian trying to interpret the bible literally and historically when it was actually written by mystics in the language of the unconscious (symbolism and allegory)

The characters are mythic, and there are archetypes hinted at barely seen below the surface.. the story is other worldy, unbelievable even.. but that's really the whole point

How many of the female characters in this movie would you describe as mystic? Everyone of them is purely defined by there relationships to men (gf, wife, mother) As usual with Mr J.J.'s work there is a huge amount of mysogony, I assume because he has heard about girls, maybe even had a few delivered, but I doubt he has ever actually had a conversation with one.

We had the great mother in the opening scene giving birth to the universe out of the chaos and then later the goddess Venus balancing and taming the intellect.. polarity (man woman) is the cornerstone of this universe so of course the women are defined by men just as men are defined by their relationship to women.. it sounds like you have have colored Mr Abrahams with your own politics

There was not a single female character given a spoken line unless they were related to main male character in some way. How many women did you notice in the starfleet auditorium each time kirk was up infront of the panel? How about in general across the enterprise? Did it seem like a true representation of the actual ratio? (52% female too 48% male)

The criticism of this particular part of the film has been replicated in most of the critical commentaries I have read.

If you can bring me one female character with three lines that wasn't giving birth or romantically involved with a main character I'll take it on board.

Face it boys and girls, the damn thing was a sausage fest. I like my Trek like I like my parties, with plenty girls.

And you know this... how? I mean about Kirk's supposed "lack of experience". I sure don't remember the film reviewing the details of all 3 years of Kirk's Cadet training, nor do I remember any line of dialog that implied that Cadets aren't regularly assigned shipboard duties as a part of their schooling.

Your assumption that Kirk lacks such experience is just that: an assumption.

Oh, I can buy the time-travel aspect. The promotion, no. No freaking way would that have happened. (Then again, I couldn't buy Spock jettisoning Kirk off of the ship!)

Now since I'm nitpicking, ok, here's two:

-When the Vulcans et al were fighting the Narada over Vulcan, not ONE of them could take 2 seconds to lob a few photons at the freaking drill and destroy it, like Spock did on Earth? Even a suicide mission with a shuttle would have sufficed.

-The transporting to a ship in warp or just the increased transport range. Once the drill shut off, WHY didn't someone IMMEDIATELY beam a photon or two INTO the Narada engine room? With the drill off, transport could have happened. They might have got to him *before* he dropped the red matter.

Yeah, it's nitpicky. But I'm a Trekkie! Of course I'm going to pick it to pieces. That does not mean I did not enjoy the movie. Well, minus a few destructions, of course.

Understandable. But if you're going to show a believable career for Kirk then we're going to have another series of boring movies when a bunch of characters we don't know nor care about.

Then next movie, time has passed and he is now Captain. No need to explain how.

You know, something more logical than either giving the Flagship to a recent cadet/graduate or doing a series with movies with characters we do not care about.

And count me among the people rolling eyes at Pike appointing Kirk his first officer. C'mon, it's the flagship of the Federation. People work their lives to get a posting like that. Don't try to tell me that they didn't have people ho were qualified to take the spot.
