Death for nothing?--spoilers

The purpose of the collision course was to disable the Narada - the novel confirms that - with the hope that it might destroy it. According to the novel and the prequel comic the Narada had the ability to repair itself automatically by regenerating.
As in retro-fited Borg technology or bio-engeneering?

The Kelvin collision likely did enough damage to the Narada for the Klingons to capture Nero and crew and send them to Rura Pente.

Borg tech

Well..I am happy this did not come up in the movie. While cool for 'in the know uber fans", the very mention of BORG would have ramped up the geek verbage that this movie tried to keep at a lower level

Agreed. Even though I read the comic, I still just like to think "this ship is from the future and is therefore a lot more powerful." I don't think we need a reason beyond that.

Admiral Janeway gave Nero Borg techonlogy from the future..... wait a minute... ;)

So I am not quite sure what damage, if any, the Kelven did to the Romulan ship. Have seen the movie three-times. Was there any mention by the Romulans if any damage had been done???

In the wide shot showing the shuttles escaping, the Narada was clearly adrift, slowing spinning to the side with secondary explosions occurring.

Yep..I saw that as well. So I guess he "KIRK" did die for a good reason. And as someone said before, he was shooting the missiles launched at the shuttles...

And 25 years later not one of the 47 Klingon ships could do the same thing! hard to believe.

Klingons don't do kamikaze runs.

The way the ship was just floating there it was obvious the collision had disabled The Narada. Otherwise they would have targeted the escape shuttles. So George did his job. The Kelvin was never going to destroy The Narada, even by ramming it. Even The Enterprise didn't destroy The Narada. They just took pot shots at it while The Red Matter did the real work.

Well 25 years later they weren't just thrown through a singularity by a supernova, they were prepared and ready. For all we know their ship was badly damaged already before the Kelvin encounter. Did we even confirm the shields were up?

George Kirk did program a collision course -- and an auto destruct, as well. I just read it in the book. It says he originally intended to ram their weapons, but changed tack and hit down below.

He did them some damage. You can see it as the Narada lists away on a slow roll during that long shot of the shuttles escaping.

Would have helped if they threw some small scene in showing them, oh, ten years after the encounter with KELVIN, still repairing the damage.
