Size Of The New Enterprise (large images)

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

Yes they goofed on the internal shots... too much space for a ship its size. But they did the same in TMP, and lots of other movies/episodes.

But it happens in all series/movies. The F/X people are under intense pressure, and having it "look cool" is always more important that having it "look accurate".

The 487m figure does seem reasonable.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

...keep in mind that George Kirk saved over 800 lives from the Kelvin...

...Note: the new Enterprise still looks goofy to me. The nacelles are silly looking and the neck is pushed back. Blerg.

That's the point I was going to make. the NuE has to be bigger.

The second point I disagree. I like the new ship and thought she looked great on screen.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

Seriously, people need to stop using that early Ex-Astris image for reference. Start using TobiasRichter's model.

Now, could someone please scale this down so that the airlocks match the TMP one.
End of discussion.

This where I think it fits, and in the line up looks like a Constition refit itself, a really big one

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

IMO, there is no WAY the new Ent is even as big as the Galaxy, let alone bigger. There are few shots in the movie that really allow for an excellent comparison, but there is one: When the shuttle with Kirk and McCoy arrives. I will have to see the movie again (and I would like to anyway, hopefully this weekend, so I may comment further at that point), but my recollection from my first viewing is that I noticed that you can get a pretty good idea of how big the shuttlebay is compared to the total size of the ship, and how big the shuttles themselves are compared to the ship. And those relative sizes vs. the height of the secondary hull place it squarely in a range that would allow for it to be a bit bigger or smaller than the refit Connie, but nowhere NEAR the 642-meter long Galaxy. If the ship is intented to be that big (let alone bigger), then that shuttlebay arrival scene is a serious effects bog-up.

Two afterthoughts on the above ramblings:

1) That is from my recollection. I will see it again, and try to pay very close attention to the shuttles as they fly into the bay.

2) THIS IS NOT A RANT OR A NITPICK. I just enjoy taking apart the technical stuff (in general, but especially in Trek), but I am NOT upset about it. The Defiant on DS9 practically made it's infamous size inconsistencies into an art form, but it never bothered me more than "Gee, it would have been nice if they could have gotten that right, huh. Oh well."
I really enjoyed the new movie. If the ship size vs. shuttlecraft size IS a massive effects bog-up... I will laugh at it and move on. It will not affect my enjoyment of the movie or any potential sequals, nor will I start calling for a JJ hanging.

Given the (ahem) somewhat high level of emotions surrounding the reactions to the movie lately, I just wanted to make that crystal clear. :D

Agreed I can't belivve people are still even that Ex-Astris ''E'' it's just SOOOOOO inacurate!

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

I like this ship. It's big!

Even if the hangar bay occupies almost all the secondary hull it's still ginormous.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

487 meters looks about right to me. This gels with my gut reaction to the Engineering scenes: "The pipes don't bug me, but where's the curved walls of the hull? it looks like a box."

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

I've been involved elsewhere in this same discussion, and don't feel like going through all the details again, but you may find these images helpful in the debate. I think they make a pretty compelling case for at least 760m/2500 feet and at most 900m/3000 feet.

Establish the size of the humans standing next to shuttles, establish size of shuttle, establish size of hangar door and bay and use those numbers to extrapolate.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

I think generally the size appeared to have been treated inconsistently. Overall, I hope it's not more than twice the length of the classic/refit ship. I think the details are fudgeable to fit that range.

Re: Size Of The New Enterprise

Where is this mentioned?

'The making of Star Trek', 1968, written by Stephen Whitfield & Gene Roddenberry.

I've got a slightly tattered soft cover copy. Its more than 400 pages long!

Original Enterprise:

Overall length: 947 feet.

Disc diameter: 417 feet.

Secondary hull length: 340 feet.

Warp nacelle length: 504 feet.

Cheers
