Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

Have you seen the film yet?

As I've stated.

I'm going to see it after it has been out at least a week.

But that matters not.

I know the movie in great detail.

I know the details of every movie I've ever seen before I so much as park my car at the theatre.
What a sad, sad world you must live in, to be devoid of surprise like that (I'm not even attempting sarcasm--it is actually a sad thing). It also explains much of your comments.

What is wrong with not enjoying surprises?

That is hardly an illegitimate viewpoint.

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

Then why the posts by people talking about how great the movie is...and the fact that they continually refer to the movies popularity, its "buzz" and its reviews?

If they are praising the movie on its own merits those types of statements should not be present.

I know its comforting to say to yourself.

"This Star Trek movie is so GREAT!!. So great that even the non Star Trek fans love it".

In reality, it is

"this Star Trek movie is so great. BECAUSE non Star Trek fans love it".

Chasing popularity.........

You are a fucking idiot. :guffaw:

I'll gladly take a warning for that, too. I'm sorry, but this pure level of asinine ignorance just can't be ignored. It's just outrageously bad, and so filled with fail that it's like watching the Hindenburg go down in a hurricane on the Fourth of July! Oh, Dayton, your insane ramblings amuse me so.

Remember folks, because Dayton doesn't like the movie, the only reason all of you like it is because it's popular!

I mean, you say some stupid shit, mostly when you were in TNZ and over at WF, but wow, you can spread it everywhere you go! You're like the Johnny Appleseed of bullshit!

Holy shit, you made my day, you shit shoveling, ignorant backwoods son of a bitch!

Why the personal attack?

You don't see me attacking anyone here.

Okay, I'll join J. in risking a warning:

You are a moron.

Dayton, you do attack people. You attack them, not just their ideas, and you do it in a way that you can feign innocence, but most people know better. Cover shit in sugar and all you have is sugary shit. You don't fool most people. You attack all the time.

Once again. Why the personal attack against someone who has not attacked you at all?

Is obeying the rules that big of a problem?

Dayton, when I get a warning from this, it will be the first one I've had in years.

This is neither the time nor the place, and I will not give you an audience with which to feign your innocence.
Plus, why do I need examples? You are always telling us what our intentions are, so I just told you yours.
Turnabout is fair play.

Yeah, yeah, go on. You don't have any proof to back up your assertions but I guess you demand it from others.
Anyway, as I said, no audience for you to feign innocence. You've been warned many times during your tenure here, even so far as getting temp bans, so let's not start bullshitting. Okay?

Historically, no.

In May of 2009.

Yes. Yes. and Yes.!!

This doesn't help your case at all. Not only are you ragging on the people who like the movie, saying that they only like it because the rest of the world likes it, but you're doing all of this without having seen the movie. I don't care how well you claim to know movies before "so much as parking your car", but if you haven't seen the movie, you truly don't know shit as to whether or not it is good.

I'm no fan of the "The people who like this movie are moron sheep!" group, but at least most of them have seen the movie before they start pulling that crap. That puts them several ranks above you.

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

Can you accept that many people who have been Trekkies for a long time can love this new flick because they think it's great and no other reason?

No I can not.

Long time Star Trek fans love this movie because

1) It is the first "big budget event type" of Star Trek movie in memory.

2) It has broad general audience appeal which Star Trek fans as stated above are dying to have.

3) It is the first Star Trek movie in years and there is no series on the air. Thus aside from Trek Lit and computer games it is the only Trek in town.

Ironic isn't it. For two generations Star Trek fans have ridiculed Star Wars and other science fiction franchises as "mindless action" and things like that.

Now, they have a movie closer in general tone to Star Wars and other science fiction franchises than any other.

And they revel in it.
I suppose I could attempt to pyschoanalyze your reasons for disliking the film -- but I won't, because I don't know you. I'm satisfied in saying "no film can please everyone". Conversely, you don't know me, so stop telling me that I liked this film because I am a sheep.

I simply had a fun 2 hours and 6 minutes at the movie theater, and that's it. I think I could have just come out of a 2-year coma -- without any knowledge of budget or "hype" or who the hell else said they liked it -- and would have still had fun watching this film.

It was fun...bottom line.

...By the way, I never ridiculed all of Star Wars for being mindless action -- just parts One and Two of the prequel trilogy.

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

That is what you claim.

But naturally, no one in the U.S. at least likes to admit that they are simply "going along with the crowd".
I don't live in the US. And I didn't need "a crowd" when I watched all the other iterations--most of which were vastly LESS popular than this one. The reasons why one likes or dislikes the movie are vast--not the narrowly defined fantasy you've constructed to make yourself feel better about your own views.

We can just agree to disagree.
Are you serious? You want me to "agree to disagree" about my OWN motivations? Really?

One--if you are serious, then you really need to re-think your statement.

Two--if you're not, then you are either making a poor attempt at humour or a lame attempt at baiting (and if that's the case, I'll withhold my response as it would not be within this forum's rules).

You're entitled to that approach. It remains a sad way to live.

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

I also note the need among some people here to say, in effect, "It's popular (this weekend, anyway) so it must be good!"
Popular with audiences, as well as loved by critics. I mean, art is obviously a subjective thing. But there has to come a point where a person says "since this film is loved by so many, it must be a good film that just doesn't click with me".

Yet some still persist in believing that because they don't like the film everybody else is delusional.

^ Because of your avatar, when I read your posts I have Nathan Fillion's voice in my head saying them. :p

I agree.

I love Star Trek V. Yet it is considered one of the most terrible Trek movies in existence, tied with Nemesis in some cases in popularity, yet I love it. Now, I could have the mindset that everyone else is just too delusional to understand the movie, but I don't. I realize that I love it, and it is not very well loved by others. Are they wrong? No. Am I wrong? No. Our tastes are different, nothing more.
