Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Aide?

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

As usual, the slightest criticism is seen as 'bashing the hell' out of something. But, feel free to stake out your turf and defend it, like any fanatic is prone to do.

You're already criticizing a movie that you haven't seen, yet I'm the fanatic because I can't take you seriously because of that. Okay.

As the old saying goes Fool me Once, shame on you, Fool me Twice, shame on me (it's even in Trek; thanks Scotty) I've paid to see bad trek before, I'm not going to go out of my way this time.

I'll see it, but I'm not contributing to high first weekend numbers, and fighting all the mindless fans who like what Trek has turned into.

That's fine. If you see it and don't like it, I'm fine with that. It's not everyone's cup of tea. However, that credence will be lent you once you see it, not before. As of now, you're griping about a movie you haven't seen, and insulting people who have seen it and like it. Now who is whom in this little situation? Am I the fanatic? Or are you? Think about it.

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

I liked the movie a lot. Not as much as some of the other Star Trek movies, but
the movie is definitely in my top five favorite Star Trek movies. If I could
have influenced Abrams before the movie was finished I would have made a few
changes, like cut the monster chase scene down a lot and fixed a couple plot
holes, but no movie is perfect. What the movie lacked in plot it made up for
in special effects and character development in my opinion. I really do hope that this movie is a huge success that will lead to more movies with this cast and crew, or even hopefully a brand new TV series with this cast and crew in this new alternate timeline.

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

I haven't seen the film, but I doubt very much it'll be 'good Trek' when I do see it.
The fact that you haven't seen the movie make your arguments about the aforementioned movie quite transparent, indeed.

If you've seen it and either like or dislike it, that's both fine.

It's good you say "I doubt", because that affirms that you have no strong opinion yet -- you cannot have one yet, for you haven't seen the movie. There are others who disregard that little fact.

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

You are not alone. But for now, our opinion is in the minority. I suspect when the hype is over the tide may change.

Well, you're wrong. You are so far in such a small minority that the likelihood of significant change in your direction is somewhat less than that Paramount will pull this movie from distribution and replace it with Star Trek Nemesis.

Feel free to hold your breath.

I've been downing that drink since 2005. (TYVM Lost) But its not Kool Aid. It's Slusho! It's fruity! Don't play down to me by saying I drink domesticated Kool Aid, blah. :D

Oh, I don't know the numbers are already moving in the opposite direction.

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

I don't understand how long time fans can view this latest movie and NOT be insulted. Seriously. Because they had a cameo of a tribble, we're expected to swoon? There wasn't even a hint of moral understory. Especially after all the hype, I was completely depressed after seeing it.

I posted a review of my own on my blog: http://thirdcathode.blogspot.com/2009/05/movie-review-star-trek-2009.html

Since nearly everyone else seems to have loved the movie, I would like to hear from fans who had negative reactions as I did - why did no one else find the film insulting?

You are not alone. But for now, our opinion is in the minority. I suspect when the hype is over the tide may change. But I'm with you. I suspect that the shinny things of the big budget, such as sets, special effects, etc... had their required effect, that is, the effect of distracting everyone. Also, fans were so starved for Trek they will, as you put it, "swallow" anything.

Fan starvation intoxication syndrome, people are so starved for anything trek they will eat up anything with at least a remotely good packaging, and be drunk off the high it brings for a period of time. Critical reception aside, I suspect the fans will eventually react like the SW fans eventually reacted to prequels. Emotions will cool and the enthusiasm will die down, and people will take an earnest look at the film. The DVD release will likely reaffirm this. Just consider this the "Honeymoon" period, things will inevitably balance out within the fandom.

I think so too.

What numbers would those be?

I've got plenty of Star Trek. 715 episodes, 5 series, 10 movies (now 11), a ton of video games, books and much, much more. Yet I really love this new movie, and think J.J. did an excellent job. I am buying the movie on BluRay when it comes out, guaranteed.

we can wait and see.

Absolutely. As I said, with your confidence you should feel free to hold your breath in anticipation.

Let us know how that works out.

Critical reception aside, I suspect the fans will eventually react like the SW fans eventually reacted to prequels.

You are fated to have your suspicions unrealized. :)

Well, judging by the new posts already being made I think not.

Yeah, because the poll really reflects your opinion.

Again, we can go on in forever like this, but there is no need.

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

I agree with the thread starter. You Kool Aid drinkers are not real fans. Me, I'm such a huge Trek fan that I don't like TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT or any of the films or books.

I very much enjoy the fact that, having lost the argument, you're reduced to fantasizing that one day you'll wake up and magically turn out to have been right. :)
