That awesome opening scene

But how about that opening scene! They could have made an entire movie based on the Kelvin! I have never cried 10 minutes into a movie before, but that opening was heart-wrenching!

It was definitely an awesome way to start the film. For two actors that didn't even share screentime together, I certainly felt for Kirk's parents. They were fantastic.

The scene, then the opening credits and the music.... absolutely brilliant. Top class. Loved it. I knew I would love this film the minute the "Star Trek" logo appeared.

As someone who is confused and conflicted about what all of this "alternative" and "prime" junk adds up to, I must say that to me the best part of the film overall was the opening r.e. the Kelvin. They hit this part out of the park. The rest is still up for debate, in my book, but these scenes were fantastic.

I've said it before but I'll say it again: the first 10 min. of the flick were more epic than most Trek movies, and definitely moreso than 3 of the 4 TNG films.

The opening was brilliant. It really sucks you into the film. The few reviews I've read in which people don't like the opening are the negative reviews. If you didn't like that sequence, you didn't like Star Trek. It's as simple as that.

My fiancee, only a recent new Star Trek fan, noted that the haters are coming out of the woodwork with this new film. Those who don't like this movie don't just dislike it. They hate it. It's surprising because by any metric it's not a bad film. I love it, but I would have expected those who don't like it at least to have said it was average.

I loved the opening scenes. I think it was the best part of the movie. I began tearing up by the end. I agree that the movie could have revolved around the Kelvin & her crew.

Robau came up with a pretty well thought plan when for his first officer when he knew he was walking into certain death. And even then, right before he got skewered, he reversed the interrogation.

As Jeri pointed out in another thread, Robau's going to Nero and stalling him with questions is what bought Kirk enough time to save the shuttles. If anything, the bad-assness was a team effort. They both gave their lives to save the crew.

Oh, and Robau has the pecs of a bad-ass for sure.

I didn't really think of that until you mentioned it-- but I disagree. The Ds9 opener was more about Sisko learning to move on from the painful death of his wife and his hard, misguided feelings of blame against Picard.

In this timeline, James never knew his father... I can't imagine how fundamentally a different person I would be without the guidance and wisdom of my dad.

I felt the first 10 minutes of the film sent a very clear message that Star Trek is no longer necessarily a safe place and that is a very good thing. In simpler terms, it scared the hell out of me. The sense of scale and hopelessness of that scene were excellent.

Agreed.

Hell, the movie could have stopped right there and that would (almost) have been enough. The fact the rest of it actually managed to live up to that first 10 or so minutes was, at the absolute least, impressive.

That opening sequence, leading up to and including the title, is incredible. Damned near perfect.

Among its more minor achievements is that it convinces one for the first time in ages that these are people aboard a huge advanced spacecraft far, far out in the reaches of the galaxy rather than actors on a soundstage.

IT was stunning, and ultimately heart-wrenching. Hats off to the guy who played George, he did quite a bit with a small part.
