Did they do away with Kirk's big brother George Samuel Jr.? Who was the kid that 10-year-old Jim waved at while driving the stolen car? Was the guy on the phone his mother's boyfriend or Sam?

Re: Kirk's older brother Sam?

Maybe Sam is home, stoically taking his uncle's abuse while his kid brother acts out. Sam's the one who goes on to be a family man, after all.

Re: Kirk's older brother Sam?

Yeah, I think there was already a thread on this last night. Probably going to be a lot of that going around...

The credits identified the character as "Kirk's stepdad."

Re: Kirk's older brother Sam?

^ Um no, he said Johnny

Um no he said Georgie, this is both VERY CLEAR and in context with a cut scene that lead to the chase scene of George and Jim getting beat by their uncle while their mother is away VERY apparent.

Hence why his step brother is trying to hitch a ride away, they where both running away from home.

The actor is listed as having played Johnny in the credits.

Likely by someone who needs their ears cleaned out.

lets be clear here IMDB is absolutely NOT a authority on credits. Its as user editable as wikipedia. He is George Samuel Kirk Jr.

Though I have to say this poor kid, first people think he didnt say Tiberius now they dont think he said Georgie.

Re: Kirk's older brother Sam?

I wondered about this as well. I have no idea if that kid he passes on the road is his older brother (it didn't occur to me as I was watching it, I just assumed it was a school chum), but I'll try to pay more attention when I see it again.

FWIW, I'd imagine the writers deliberately kept this vague. There's nothing that explicitly states George Kirk Jr. isn't around somewhere, but having him out of the picture (and unmentioned) kind of strengthens the characterization of Jim Kirk as a troubled, rebellious loner. It makes it easier to believe that he grew up that way if he appears to be an only child, without an older brother for him to look up to... a surrogate father-figure if you will. Plus, his jerk of an uncle/step-dad/whatever clearly isn't role model material, so Kirk's acting out makes all the more sense.

Re: Kirk's older brother Sam?

TrekMovie.com has this comment.

Spencer Daniels is not credited as George Samuel Kirk, Jr. (Jim Kirk’s brother), the role he was reported to be playing. He is instead credited as someone named “Johnny.”

I think there was a last minute change during editing, and "Johnny" was overdubbed in during post production.

I'm just a little disappointed in this change.

Re: Kirk's older brother Sam?

Showing anything on screen costs money; and when they hired that kid and took him out there to Kern County to walk along the road and have kid Kirk yell at him, they had a reason in mind. They either changed their mind about Sam or something else; "Johnny" does not look like the Kirks at all -- and as we have seen, the Kirk family resemblance is uncanny.

Re: Kirk's older brother Sam?

I can understand the change. It develops Kirk's loner persona much stronger.

I wonder if we'll see the stuff with Sam on the DVD.
