The emotion of Kirks Death/Birth

Seen the movie twice now.

Damn, that opening sequence hit me hard both times. Such a beautiful score and wonderful performances from the actors playing George and Winona Kirk.

I could literally feel the hairs sticking out the back of my neck as Kirk was born. I had goosebumps.

That entire sequence was wonderful, yet heartbreaking at the same time.

Anyone else get that feeling?

Just got back from my second viewing... and yes, it hit me just as hard the second time through. I think the opening bit is simply outstanding. One of the absolute best opening sequences in any movie. And we barely know who any of them are, and they're only on screen for such a short time. George Kirk was fantastic.

And though Winona was lying on the bed to give birth she was at least sitting up, so that satisfied the birth professional side of me.

i agree, the opening scene was awesome right from those familiar sound effects you hear from the original TV series. and with the father being a hero, really put a gulp in my throat.

Yep. Now even the soundtrack evokes the feeling.

Simply beautiful in so many ways.

I just got back from my second showing, and it still packed the same punch. From the ominous music cue at the beginning, that sublime establishing shot of the Kelvin to that final moment where Kirk has just been born and his father crashes the ship... chills, I tell ya. (The same this time for the ending of the film. Or the mind meld sequence. I saw it in German this time, so sadly not with Nimoy's voice, but even that can't take away from the wonder that Spock conveys in that montage of the supernova, or him on Delta Vega seeing Vulcan's destruction. I love it.)

By the way, I thought this thread would be about the delicious irony that the first scene featuring James T. Kirk since his last appearance - his death scene in GEN - was so much more authentically emotional and, well, his BIRTH.. It just tells you: that guy cannot be killed, and neither can good Star Trek.

I love this film even more now than I did three days ago.

Sorry, I didn't buy it. Something in my head just clicks off at the first sign of forced emotional manipulation. besides, I had no investment in daddy, mommy looked silly being rushed through the hallways and we've all seen the whole birth from the fires of death thing at least a dozen times before. I will say the movie actually got better.

I was astounded that they found yet another guy who could have played James T. Kirk. The resemblance among Shatner, Pine and this fellow was positively familial.

My wife & myself went into this movie with apprehensions...seeing as we have followed Star Trek since the original episode on live TV? The opening totally put us at ease...because you actually got that feeling of... "Space...the final frontier!"

Terrific scene. Very emotional. The actor playing George Kirk does look a lot like Chris Pine.
