crowd-response reports (SPOILERS)

Audience clapped at the end -- as well they should've -- this is an EXCELLENT film! BEST. TREK. MOVIE. EVER!!!

Bar none.

It was like heaven, sitting in a darkened cinema, pretty much all by myself right up to the end, just having my little ST experience in silence.
That sounds so majorly wrong, but that might be my twisted mind suggesting things. :D

Saw it a second time tonight. Saturday night, 9:20pm showing. About 35 people in the cinema. SAD.. it's a miracle this cinema is still open, it's an old one and people prefer the big screens and big noise. Heck I remember watching AOTC there and there being only 3 people on the opening day!!

Anyway.. people chuckled. Not much more to say.

Years later I had a friend's sister look at me like I was an AIDS victim when I said I regularly went to the flicks on my own. It was just something I ALWAYS did and here she was feeling pity for me. THAT felt weird because I never knew I was supposed to be pitied for going to see a film on my own.

I usually go to the cinema on my own, too.

I saw it in Washington, D.C.'s Gallery Place/Chinatown on Friday, May 8th. The theater - one of four, possibly five screens showing the film at that location - was packed to capacity for an 8:45 PM showing. The crowed applauded mildly at the beginning of the film, and then very loudly indeed at the end.

Welcome back, Star Trek, my old friend.

I went to The Bridge in Philadelphia, PA. We got there and saw no crowds which was disappointing, until I saw a friend of mine who worked at the theater and she told me the reason there was none was because every showing was practically sold out. A crowd did gather near the time to get into the theater, and the showing was packed minus the first row of seats in the theater. The demographic of the people in there was odd too. Perhaps because the theater is located in University city, but there were ALOT of college students there, which I found nice to see.

Anyway the movie starts. Excellent audience response. They laughed when they needed to, were silent when they needed to be, and at the end the movie got a huge ovation from the audience.

One of the funniest parts of the night however, was the GI Joe trailer. The trailer goes through all this epic shit, and right at the end the title card comes up. The whole audience goes silent, then all of a sudden one woman just starts laughing her ass off. The whole theater just started laughing with her.

That movie is gonna suck.

Sold out IMAX show in Emeryville. Audience went nuts for it. Almost every little "iconic" thing people cheered. The only odd part was that people cheered for Quinto and Pegg, but not Pine.

The first night I went there where cheers and laughs at all the right spots, but it was somewhat subdduded. This was a showing full of trek fans though and I took it to be people taking it in.

Yesterday though when I went with my dad. Much more general audience and they where LOVING it. There was a audible GASP when Spock prime showed up, the young girl behind me let out a "omg" when he turned. The bullshit line as well as all of Scottys lines got huge laughs.

And it was clear by the end people where telling people to go see it on the phone.

This movie is going to be huge.

Yeah, last night, as soon as the credits rolled, the guy next to us was on the phone recommending it to somebody.

Went to see it again today.

This time, the theater was about 1/4-1/5 full. Not the 8 people of the first show on Thursday.

My mom, a non-Trekkie, LOVED the movie. She was not expecting to do so.

On the way out, some people asked us how the movie was. I gave the thumbs-up.

I heard people asking for Trek tickets as I passed by the ticket window.

People in Toronto are pretty reserved, so.... Stunned silence after the opening scenes..(yikes! real drama in star trek?) Laughing and conversations in all the appropriate spots in the film. Gasps of 'wow' when the Enterprise is shown for the first time. You could also tell from the conversations around that people were trying to catch up on key plot points, the audience was now really into the movie. Spontaneous applause at the end of the movie that I haven't heard since the early Star Wars or TWOK days. Also a huge line-up to get into the next showing. Saturday 6:40pm showing and the theatre was packed! Many conversations after the film, all of them positive. Best Trek film period, and I even liked TMP.

I've seen it three times so far. The first night was an advanced screening. There were 6 or 8 of them (half in IMAX). I went to a regular screening since IMAx movies give me migraines - and the theater was half-full. It wasn't bad, really, for a Thursday evening, and I'm sure a lot of people had no idea the screenings would be so early. (I went to an 8 p.m. show). The other two times I went were during off-hours in the daytime. One had the theatre half full, the other had only a few people in the audience.

People laughed at all the right spots. When Olsen showed up in his red suit during the parachuting scene, you could hear the buzz and muted laughter around the theatre - even in the one with hardly anyone there. It was clear that everyone knew he was a marked man - a "red shirt."

I'm pretty sure that in all three shows, most people knew Star Trek. The average audience member was middle-aged - between approx. 40 and 60-years-old. Most likely, they were among the original fans, or those who discovered TOS in syndication early on. Then there were a smaller group of 20 to 30-somethings. Some people brought their kids. I my two 16-year-olds with me. There were a handful of people who appeared to be over 60.

Also the make-up of the group was multiracial and multi-ethnic, and while there seemed to be slightly more men than women, there were a number of women who came with female friends, as well as women who came with their husbands and boyfriends.

All three shows, people applauded at the end, and most people went out with smiles on their faces.

Our 1st viewing was Thursday with a house full of Trekkies, lots of reactions to the film.

Our second was Saturday afternoon with a mixed bag of Trekkies, Trekkers and Straights. It was a nearly full house but I could tell the reactions levels were lower, (meaning most were Straight.) When it was over I tried to gauge the reaction of the Straights around me and while they weren't hooting and hollering like the fans present were, they were positive for the film.

I know for a fact later screenings at that theater that same day all sold out.

I went to a second viewing last night - the first was filled with geeks, this was leaning far more to a general audience and yet there were very few seats left spare, the laughs were louder, more emotion showed for the Kelvin sequence (and one person saying "Wasnt he in Home & Away?") and much louder reactions to the classic lines.

I went with a non-Trek fan, I'd shown her some DS9 that she enjoyed and she said afterwards she had very high hopes for the film after seeing how much I was looking forward to it and told me it surpassed all those expectations. I think it's safe to say she's now a fan ;) we went for the 5:15 show in Glasgow's Cineworld and she was still talking about it at 3am! She even admitted to being a little choked up with the Kelvin sequence.

The best comment though came from a girl as we were leaving who grinned and said "This was WAY better than Dark Knight."

My dad also saw the film yesterday (Merchants Theater at 10:45am - somewhere near LaBelle in Florida) and said there was a lot of applase, particularly when the Star Trek title came up and the end of the film, and that the theatre was packed with a lot of people who loved it - and he found himself applauding himself by the end.

Cellphone Whackjobs

Did any of you have any CELLPHONE WHACKJOBS in your showings? I have seen it three times now, and I am shocked to say? NO bad incidents..none...I am totally feeling good about human society now!!!
