So, anyone here ready to declare this the best Star Trek film yet?

Because I'm too young to appreciate the slow pace of the first few films, this movie is indeed the best Star Trek movie yet.

Your honesty about your age (and not liking slow films because of it) is refreshing :D

I'll have my ranking tomorrow after is see Trek 11 tonght!

II suspect I'll think TWOK will have more to its story but ST 2009 will be fun to watch and will be more dynamic.

I think that TWOK does have a stronger (and simpler) narrative spine. I don't really think that alone is enough to make it the better movie.
That's precisely the debate I'm having right now. I consider narratives like TWOK's to be the perfect type of story -- strong, yet simple. However, even though I prefer TWOK's story to ST's, ST just did so many things right that it's going to be hard for me to not ultimately deem ST as the best Trek picture.

I've just gotten back from the theater. ST (2009) has far more story to it than TWOK. TWOK just seems very small compared to this movie, both in narrative and scope.

I'll declare it: we'll see if I still think this in a year but right now I think this is the best Star Trek movie. It's in a completely different league of its own. The crew comes together too easily but that's not enough to knock the movie down.

Is it my favorite science-fiction movie Blade Runner? No. But it brings Star Trek into the 21st Century and I'm going to see it again soon. The first six movies are such old hat to me that it's nice to have something new that's TOS to look forward to.

Here's to more movies.

My new ranking:

1. Star Trek (2009)
2. Star Trek V: TFF
3. Star Trek: TMP
4. Star Trek II: TWOK
5. Star Trek: First Contact
6. Star Trek IV: TVH
7. Star Trek VI: TUC
8. Star Trek III: TSFS
9. Star Trek Generations
10. Star Trek: Insurrection
11. Star Trek: Nemesis

Superb movie.

The Best? Too early for me to tell after just one screening yesterday in a rather empty cinema. Plus need more viewings before I decide, if it's up to FC and TWOK.

I totally agree that it's too soon to say the best. I'll form my opinion after the hysteria dies down. Here we are all predispositioned to like the film. Most of you had an high opinion that was not altered even after seeing the film the way I did many years ago with TWOK. The way I am still with every Star Wars film. My theatre too in a heavy populated metro area was not so full. I'm not feeling too good about the overall box office. It may already be too late to renew this generation's love for Star Trek or space. Space travel in the real world is not so much of an phenomenon as it was for older generations and that had an impact on the frenzy for space films. Not to forget the economy doesn't support a lot of entertainment choices. I wouldn't be surprised if Beyonce's movie Obsessed or Marvel's Wolverine beats it out in there second running weekends.

Right now I'd say so. Maybe that'll change once I come off my high from the film but for now it is the best ever.

It's fantastic. I don't know if it's the best, but it's the most important Star Trek film since TMP.

Agreed.

For me The Wrath of Khan is my all time favorite Trek movie.

P.S. Love the avatar scottydog!

I've been watching Trek since '66, and I think fans should just level with themselves.

This movie is in a Trek class by itself, and that class is an order of magnitude better than any of the others.

Cosign. Love it or hate it (I'm liked it, didn't love it), the film just saved the franchise in the biggest possible way. In that regard, it's probably a more significant film than "Batman Begins" (it's no "Dark Knight" however). I think Batman could have survived a mediocre re-entry. If STXI suffered the same fate, I really doubt Paramount would have tried to resurrect it again. It'd live on in novels and comics and that's about it.

By what standard? It certainly can't be based on plot!

The film ranks in the top half of ST films but I'm not ready in enshrine it as "the best ever". Especially when it's Saturday.

Well, it was the best Star Wars movie ever made.

Best Star Trek movie? Hell no.

You've never watched Star Wars movie have you? Star Wars movies are about the story, but leave out the acting for the most part. Star Trek movies are less about the movie and more about the acting and the characters.

this was the best "star wars" film in a while.it was good, not great . but i just saw too much in it that was more reminicent of star wars than star trek.
Agreed.
TUC and TWOK still gotta be ranked above it. Maybe even TVH but not sure

By all the usual ones. Trek movies at best have received 2-1/2 stars from critics. That's what WOK gets. The critical reviews for this movie have been excellent -- three stars or higher; and as I've seen it twice, I agree.

I've only seen it once so I think it's too premature to rank it yet. I need to see it a few other times over a long period of time. My opinion will likely change somewhat. But if I had to guess where it might rank, I would say it's somewhere near the top (but still not as good as, say, TWOK).

TWOK
TUC
ST'09
FC
TVH
TSFS
TMP
GEN
INS
TFF
NEM

Uh oh, I think all the Empire Strike Back fans are going to disagree about that!

And I'm not sure how you could say ST are more about the acting/characters than plot. I mean, they've gone through some RIDICULOUS plots and I don't recall those films having exceptional acting or character development.

It's not that I think ST and SW are identical franchises - they draw from different styles of sci-fi narrative - but at the MOVIE-level (i.e. not television), both are story-driven AND character-driven.
