Are the Ones That Dislike This Movie Generally TNG/DS9/Vgr Fans?

I think so. Here are two reasons why:

1. A lot of the fans that got into Trek during the TNG/DS9/Voy-era are somewhere between 30-50 by now. They used to be the young fans. Now, they are the old and conservative ones.

2. This movie is based on TOS which is not the utopian version of Trek that we see in TNG/DS9/Voy.

Well, I liked it, but I've never been a 'traditional' VOY or DS9 fan.

I'm also under thirty and suffer no illusions that either of my preferred casts will ever see the big screen.

And I didn't like Utopian Trek...which DS9 wasn't, so your logic is flawed there.

I'm not sure what you're getting at.

I'm 28. I got into Trek with the 80's films and TNG. I like DS9. I love TOS more than any other media property in existence (really to an unhealthy level ;)). Also, I had a blast watching the new film.

No, most of the people that dislike this film seem to be the ones who grew up watching in the 60's and think that 'JJ has destroyed 40 years worth of material' or something stupid. I'm watching TMP right now... my copy still exists believe it or not.

I'm a TOS/TNG/DS9 fan, and I liked it just fine.

Only part that irritates me is the idea that all of those series were discarded, and Enterprise, the one most deserving of that treatment, wasn't. Obviously wrong, but still irritating to see the desperate Enterprise fans clinging to it.

I second this. Not to generalize of course, there are lots of 'elderly' :p who love the new movie as much as any other person.

Just to make one thing clear: I didn´t say that TNG/DS9/Voy-fans hated it in general. Most of them seem to like it.

As opposed to the TOS fans who were always this anal.

I believe that one of the major drivers for the movie was to appeal to a mass audience... disappointing the TNG/DS9/VOY audience is probably inevitable (necessary) to improve general takeup.

I was a fan of the series (being 6 when TNG came out, and enjoying frisbee more than I do now), then I re-watched them compared to a more modern (different) Battlestar Galactica, and accept that the new action orientated, gritty, interesting film really is the way to go.

I think what I liked about the TNG/DS9/VOY series is that they were series.... I'd be delighted if I could watch 20 hours a year of JJ Abrahms' Trek, a movie every few years (I hope for and anticipate a sequel) is insufficient!

I'm an old timer and while I liked the movie, it sorta didn't feel right to me. It certainly wasn't the best ST movie in my book. YMMV

If it does appeal to a new or first time audience, that's fine. All the best.

I've been a fan since the first episode of TOS aired, I was a fan of TNG and DS9 (VOY not so much), and I loved this movie.

I watched TNG as a kid, and some DS9. Couldn't get into Voyager or ENT. I'm pretty much strictly TOS now.

What the folks so up in arms about a Trek reboot don't get is that the Trek they grew up with was a reboot of Star Trek. TOS was set in the 22nd century -- until the movies retconned it. The later series retconned tons of stuff.

1) Actually the fans that got into Trek during the TNG/DS9/Voyager-Era would now mostly be in their late 20's to late 30's.

Those of Us in our mid 40's to 50's grew up with Classic Trek.

2) And TOS WAS a Very Utopian Version of the Future compared to the times We were living in. (1960's - 1970's)

Well I for one got into Trek during TNG (season 6) & love DS9 & ENT. I don't love VOY but will watch it but as for this movie was concerned I was blown away Thursday when I saw it, and today loved it more. The other shows had their run, time for TOS to come back anew.
