I LOVED the movie, but I don't know if I liked engineering....

It was definitely an "old-fashioned" looking engineering compared to what we see in TOS. Given that the movie takes place some years before TOS, I have no problem with it. Especially since, overall, there is just sooo much more detailing in every aspect of the ship -- even the turbo lifts are complex little beasties.

1) Water has some very desirable properties from a nuclear physics standpoint, and HEAVY WATER has even more interesting nuclear properties. I have no problem with them circulating huge amounts of water, and that turbine... Could be nothing more than a big ass circulating pump.

2) Cement... pourable castable refractory/shielding material. Makes sense from an engineering POV, you pour your shielding into place, no gaps no holes no joints.

3) Multiple reactors. Mentioned in TOS.

4) I thought I caught a line where they diverted power from the nacelles to shields? So obviously we're back to the ZOMG WTF method of power generation that TOS used.

5) Lastly... apparently Busch beer reacts violently with singularities. Seems that six/eight large holding tanks is enough to create a Divide By Zero scale technobabble reaction

Indeed; if I were to build a BIG spaceship today I'd certainly consider casting some of it from lunar rock!
