There was defiantly something missing from this film.
As a stand alone film it was good, but other than origional spock being in it, it didnt feel much, if anything like any star trek we have been used to.
I found it too cheesy and dumbed down.
Shame.

I did little jump at the Cardassian drink being mentioned in the bar scene. It seems unlikely that Cardassia would have been known enough for a drink to make it's name known, or to even use the name "Cardassian" as a drink moniker whether it came from that planet or not.

1) If memory serves, we don't know when we first encountered Cardassia/interacted with them
2) Alternate timeline - for all we know Starfleet started on a big 'ally search' following their mysterious attack by a massively superior force. They ran into the Cardassians, and forged a friendship.

Well, according to Memory Alpha, font of all knowledge:

Memory Alpha Cardassian History article said:
The date of first contact between the Federation and the Cardassian Union has never been established, although most fans assume that it was sometime in the first two decades of the 24th century due to the lack of any Cardassian mention in 23rd century backstories. Conversely, the Cardassian Iloja of Prim was in exile on Vulcan during the lifetime of Tobin Dax, i.e. before 2245. (DS9: "Destiny") Akorem Laan, who disappeared from Bajor in the late 22nd century also knew about Cardassians, indicating that first contact has already happened by that time. (DS9: "Accession") Cardassians and Humans also traveled in the same area of space as early as 2154. (ENT: "Observer Effect")
For all the canon-defying that some claim is going in, from a timeline point of view it appears that humans and Cardassians do actually know of each other at this point. It's not a wild leap to figure they'd exchanged drink recipes...

An interesting caricature of the original show mixed in with the best elements of the first Star Wars movie. Hehe, StarTrekWars :D

red matter created blackholes: how come one can destroy a planet, yet another allows a starship to travel through unscathed?

Maybe because the 'travel' ones weren't created in the middle of planets? :vulcan:

Letting a stable black hole/wormhole (Trek has pretty much consistently used them as representing pretty much the same phenomenon) form and then passing through it is a bit different from actually generating one inside a planet.

Well, in theory the red matter might have created a traverseable wormhole throat rather than a black hole as many thought. There's kind of similar features of both in that the gravitational forces involved are immense.

But this is Trek science rather than hard science, so I'm not going to think about it too hard.

Shame.

Cheesy and dumbed down? Unlike the rest of trek which is only accessible to theoretical physicists?

Where does this elitist ideal come from? Where was trek ever intellectual? It was always part morality play and part fisticuffs. Most of the trek we've been used to has been like stale feet and best left enjoyed by someone else far away. This new film has a young crew on a new starship finding its feet. Yep, it different, yeah, theres a few creative decisions I'd have taken differently, and a few excellent ones I'd never have thought of in a million years, but the same old same old has had its day. NuTrek is here and it is good!

It felt more like the lost in space reboot.

^^ Dang it, what's with all these new members lately (the Cadets, and Lieutenant Junior Grades and such) who barge into threads just to be negative, then leave? Have I been transported to IMDb?

EDIT: No seriously. I've scanned the last few pages and honestly every negative word came from someone who is brand new to the forum. Are we being infiltrated? :))

I am just hanging out to see this film again!!! I did not feel that way after Nemesis when I was like, "well that was nice, guess I'll buy the dvd".

I am excited that there is a whole new universe of possibility unconstrained by known history. Anything could happen.. Shran could fall into a black hole and star in the next film. We could actually GET the DS9 film people hoped for, only revisioned and set in an earlier time. Spock and Uhura could make babies. Anything..

Oh no, please no babies. I'm not a fan of that romance, I can tell you that. Somehow I didn't like this new Uhura.

Holy shit @ how good it was

Just come back from it.

Only problem was Nokia product placement. That is literally it, it was amazing apart from that and I will see it 5/6 times.

Re: Holy shit @ how good it was

I am the same way... speechless and exhasted, like after good sex!!

I have been a member of this site for sometime, I just prefer to use others.
Regular participation in the forums does not make an opinion any more or less valid.

I thought that too, but hey I'm a DS9 fan and thought it was great. ;)

No, no, no. It was KARDASHIAN. They went from a crappy cable show to their own race in two centuries. ;)

Well that explains the leather skin and neck scales.

It would have been nice for some more effort made to "the engineering deck", rather than just a Budweiser factory with spiral disco lights being shone onto the beer brewing machinery. I cringed on each engineering scene. No doubt part of the thank you to Bud was Uhura ordering Budweiser classics at the bar just before the fight!
*sigh*

At least the special effects were good.
Since when was older spock so emotional? Especially in the last scene when he held up his hand in the Vulcan salute and said "good luck" with a grin on his face.
Why on earth did younger Spock put Jim into a pod and just eject him from the ship to a possible death just for having an opinion?!

I have been following this film for months, and been the biggest promoter of it to friends, family and fans alike, but I have come away from the Cinema with a bitter sweet taste in my mouth. It was spectacular, and I will watch it again, but I feel that its too different to have included Old spock in this way. There were far too many convienent events in the film for it to feel credible in any way. Its just not got any intilectual depth to it from what I experienced, which is what I have always enjoyed in the majority of trek.
I wasnt a great fan of the origional series or the first few movies. My interest kicked in when TNG came on board, when I was about 6 years old, and I guess it will end with Enterprise.
Each to their own. I hope others enjoy the movie.

This is a repost from a closed thread.. sorry I'm having trouble getting used to there being only one thread to post about the film.

You know what I loved? That the trigger to make Spock lose his temper (which he did gloriously IMHO) was Kirk telling him he never loved his mother. What a great tie in to the TOS ep "The Naked Time". Spock always had such an odd tug of logic vs emotion with his mother.. she must have been very important to him during his difficult childhood, yet the more he succeeded the less he could reveal his feelings for her. This film is absolutely consistent with TOS and builds on this relationship.

Kind of a shame she's dead now.. but I guess that will have it's own impact on Spock's future choices. Really there is a whole world of Vulcan angst waiting for the next film to explore.
