If Star Trek Has A Disappointing Box Office...?

Peoples reaction to this movie reminds me depressingly of the reaction to nuBattlestar:Galactica.
I haven't followed nuBSG very closely -- barely at all, in fact. Please elaborate, so that I may understand your inference.

Back when nuBattlestar:Galactica came out, I strongly voiced my dislike of it.

People did not agree with me. The liked the show. Said it was better than the original (of course).

But beyond that, there was a strong undercurrent in peoples tone of "you better hope nuBG is a success because if it fails, there won't be any future Battlestar:Galactica at all"

Some actually posted this (note this was years ago so the posts here are not available, nor I assume at the Battlestar:Galactica website).

In other words a tone of "support it or else"

I see this attitude regarding Star Trek. (not necessarily here).

"You better hope it succeeds because if it fails Star Trek is finished". Or something along those lines.

Another thing I see similar to nuBG.

Fans seemingly overjoyed that non science fiction reviewers and other experts are giving it favorable reviews.

There seems to be an attitude regarding both nuBG and Star Trek of

"THEY LIKE US!!! THEY REALLY LIKE US!!!!"

In other words, after being marginalized by the mainstream for so many years Trek fans, like nuBG fans are simply beside themselves that they finally have some acceptance from the viewing public at large.

Your point being?

Yeah, I'm not quite getting the point either.

Star Trek? Popular??

OH NO! Where did we go WRONG?

Well, I went to an 11am showing this morning. There was me and 15 other people.

For those of you who like your glass to be half full, it was11am, and that's more people than I've ever watched a film with in a cinema at that time of day.

Yeah I wish I could see it at 11am! That means it would only be 2 hours away, instead of 10...

According to the box office tracking firm, Exhibitor Relations, they are estimating a $60m opening weekend. Note about previous reboots, Batman Begins made $48.7m while Superman Returns hit $52.5m so the $60m is a high number but so were the production costs for Star Trek of around $150m.

The higher the opening the better--Star Trek really has 2 weeks to make its money, given that not only Terminator is opening on the 21, but Night at the Museum the day after.

Bites fingernails.

What about Angels and Demons? I think it's going to be huge, since the book is hugely popular and also, known throughout the world.

I really hope Trek will soar, critically (which it seems it already has done) and financially (so we'll get another). But I seriously doubt it will bring in the dough.

I don't think Angels and Demons will be much of a threat. It should win its weekend, but the audience I'd think are different. Plus given how The Da Vinci Code was panned, I don't see this one doing great.

Well, I think it'll succeed and do it well.

For a quick comparison, Watchmen, nuBSG and ST, from my POV:

Watchmen, I said after I watched it, could be boiled down to one phrase: "flash effects, hollow heart". But only yesterday I figured out what it was. It's hard to care about a 'hero' who doesn't care about people, so Dr Manhattan left me cold. Nite Owl was a dork. Silk Stockings (or whatever) was eye candy. The Jerk (or whatever his name was) was a psychopath who was overcompensating for something, and realised too late in the game he was Big Time Wrong. Rorschach had potential, but was too in yer face. And don't get me started on the so-called 'smartest man in the world' - his pathetic solution showed he wasn't. Wow, I didn't realise I disliked that movie so much. Yes, there were some worthy bits, but if you don't like the leads, nothin's gonna fly.

I liked nuBSG, it was different and action-filled but had some depth, especially compared to its 70s parent, which I despised, then and now. But it got really depressing, week after week, and Starbuck should have been shot out an airlock about the end of season one.

ST has charaters you can care about, they have motives and griefs you can understand. They aren't going to depress you. They aren't distant, remote and uncaring.

Aaaaand I'm spent.

If it's a disappointing Box Office, which I doubt, than Trek will probably be done. Maybe they might go and remaster TNG (I don't care now, since I have the originals) and still continue to make some money with the 40+ Years they have. It will be unfortunate if this movie doesn't do well though. Would love to see Trek come back as a series.

I am not understanding the point here. Are you saying we should not want star trek to gain a larger audience?

You know, I was thinking about this, and it seems to me if A&D is sold, that's the audience that will gravitate toward ST more than Wolverine. So I see a symbiosis there, I guess.

91% Of Online Ticket Sales For 'Star Trek'
That the latest from big online ticket seller Fandango which also reports that Star Trek has sold out hundreds of opening weekend showtimes across the country, including showtimes in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Charlotte, San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego, Fresno, Seattle, Denver, Dallas, Houston, Colorado Springs, Indianapolis, Nashville, and Portland, Oregon. Fandango says its Star Trek ticket sales are far outpacing the site’s sales for X-Men Origins: Wolverine at the same point in that film’s sales cycle.

No if it means radically altering the fictional universes backstory.
