Actually the timeline synching Wolverine and X2 holds up very well.
In X2 Stryker says he hasn't seen Logan in 15 years. If the boy Cyclops was 15 or so in Wolverine he'd be 30 in the X-films. That lines up just about right.
It's the decades themselves that don't synch, particular if the bulk of Wolverine takes place in the 1970s. And since the decades are never actually referred to by name, it's best to ignore them.

Yes, that is correct but the the industry starts it's summer movies in May and refers to them as such.

The operative word is "Season" not "Summer".
The "summer movie season" is generally considered to start in May. Its been that way since Star Wars opened on May 25th, 1977. After that the concept of blockbusters opening at a certain time began and has continued to this day.
Sometimes the label "season" is relative...for example, Summer actually starts on June 22nd, but the summer tourist season starts here on Memorial Day and ends Labor Day because its a resort area.

To move on from the more nit-picky stuff... it would seem that Wolverine did well enough for the studios... yesterday, a Wolverine sequel was announced and today they announced a Deadpool movie.

The concept that people calling them summer movies are wrong? No that's not a hard concept to grasp at all. In fact that is the point I have been making all along.
Summer is a season, just like Spring, Fall, and Winter. They all begin and end at specific dates.
I think the point that you're missing is that the "Summer Season" and the "Summer Movie Season" are not the same thing.

"Season", for example, not just meaning a specific time of the year but also meaning a specific period of time.
This paticular period of time being the months of May through August. The bulk of which is in the Yearly Season of Summer.

The sort-of due, but it's just glossed over and ignored as it's a "dumping ground" for "meh movies." March, April and maybe February are part of the "Spring Movie Season", then you've got your Fall Movie Season (September, October) which is another slight dumping ground and finally the Winter Movie Season (November, December, January) which is the other "big season" this time for more serious/dramatic movies and Oscar contendors.
Movie Wolverine isn't Comic Book Wolverine. That's because Movie Wolverine is a crappier version of the classic comic character. He's a soft, wise-cracking bore with a heart of gold who apparently didn't become an animal until he lost his memory. In other words, he's the safe Hollywood version of the character. And the Hollywood version=crap.
About Wolverine mentoring Kitty and Jubilee, this was after several years in the X-Men. It was Xavier and the team that began to soften some of his edges. Part of the appeal of this film was supposed to be seeing a Logan that was darker and more violent than he was in X-Men The Last Stand. But we get the safe Hollywood version instead.
And hey...Wolverine is suddenly afraid of flying? He's just like everyone else! Let's have him box with the Blob? That's a cool scene. Or better yet...let's have him destroy some old geezer's bathroom after he gets his claws. Audiences will love that! Let's have him continue the movie trend of getting his ass kicked in almost every single fight scene he engages in! Tell me, isn't Movie Wolverine better than Comic Wolverine?

That was a direct nod to X2 though. He didn't like flying in that movie either.

At the end of X2, Stryker tells Wolverine that he wouldn't like who he was when he came to him. That "you were an animal then, you're an animal now...I just gave you claws." I don't know, he seemed like a pretty likable, affable guy who just happened to be a good soldier.
Then, of course, they had to retcon the bone claws. Just like in the comics!
