Boston Globe: Star Trek is "the best prequel ever" [mild spoilers]

Re: Boston Globe: Star Trek is "the best prequel ever"

I've never seen "Temple Of Doom," so I can't say with any authoritah.
Wow, really? I thought the Indiana Jones Trilogy (well, now Quadrilogy) was like a right of passage for every American male. Like Star Wars.

I've only seen "Raiders," and part of "The Last Crusade" on an in-flight movie. There are a quite a number of famous sequels that I haven't seen over the decades, either because I was only mildly interested in the previous film in the series or for other reasons at different times. With a couple of obvious glaring exceptions (like, uh, Star Trek) I don't tend to become a fan of series, just individual movies.

As for Star Wars...I've only seen "Attack Of The Clones" on DVD; for all I know that's not so unusual where the prequels are concerned. Saw all three of the original trilogy on their respective opening days though. ;)

The Temple of Doom certainly isn't a masterpiece... but it is a damn fun movie (something lacking in a number of the Trek films).

I'll admit that there may be a healthy dose of childhood nostalgia coloring my perception of it- though, no more than I have for the 80's Trek films.

Well, I don't know that I'd thought one way or the other about it being a bad film; it's just not one that I got around to.

I haven't seen the third "Back To The Future" movie either. I've been thinking that I should sit down and watch all three of them with a friend who's suddenly into 1980s movies. Amazing to think that Molly Ringwald's career was basically over before this kid was born.

Good or bad I wouldn't consider The Temple of Doom a prequel. I am a big fan of the IJ series and until a couple of years ago I didn't know Temple took place before Raiders (and I had seen it a few times). And I am sure the majority of the mainstream viewers are also unaware of this prequel aspect of Temple.
