Can you light a match?

That is a "strike anywhere" match without using the box. (Not the safety match)

For the life of me I can't. I can on a coarse enough surface, but I've never been able to do it using my hand or anything BUT a really rough surface.

What's the trick to these damn things?

I can do it with my thumb nail. Hold the match tightly in the crook of your index finger, set your thumb nail just above the dividing line of the red and blue, and forcefully and quickly scratch downward.

And be careful. I once scraped off an igniting piece of sulphur (or whatever they use nowadays) that got stuck under my nail. That was a real painful burn!

I've honestly never tried (hell, I've hardly ever had to use matches for anything throughout my life). But knowing myself as I do... I doubt it.

I can light them on my jeans. Stick your leg out in front of you and bend your knee, making the fabric tight on your hip and thigh. Hold the match tightly in your hand about 1/2 inch from the end and place the tip of the match in the middle of your butt cheek. Quickly slide the match (with as much pressure as you can without breaking the match) along the length of your thigh, bringing it off your leg at the knee. The match should travel almost the full length of your thigh. Do it fast enough and the friction will get it hot enough to light the match.

Yep. I've done that one.

I know a guy who lit one with his face. Ran it along his cheekbone and it lit. I was impressed.

One of the many skills I learned in Scouts was how to use a strike anywhere, and how to put out a mini-forest fire.

I used to light them on my teeth when I was a teenager! Seriously unless they are damp they are very easy to light.

the only way I could ever get a match from a matchbook to light was to fold the cover back and pinch the match head on the strike strip and pull it out quickly . . .

other than that, I don't have much use for matches

If you breath out all the air in your lungs and then light a match under your chin whilst sharply breathing in through your nose, invisible sulphur will go up your nose into your lungs where it will turn into smoke. You can then breath it out making it look as though you absorbed the smoke from the match through your skin.

Not recommended for asthmatics!

I just got a mental image of a group of teens rolling about laughing their arses off round the back of the shops as one of them runs frantically in circles shouting "FUCKING HELL! MY TWATTING CHIN'S ON FIRE! AARRGGHH!!"

:rommie:

Yep. I was being a bad kid and throwing all sorts of random material on the fire and then some chocolate milk. Scared me half to death.
