Car Buffs wanted

Every year in the UK older cars need to pass an MOT in order to get a certificate that says your car is fit to be on the road.

Having bought an Japanese imported Impreza STI to play about in last year I put it in for testing knowing it was flawless, but flawless it was not.

The Exhaust note is too loud! They failed me because the exhaust makes too much sound At 4000rpm is 99.8Db.

To me, This is good and means small blind kids can hear you coming, sadly the state thinks they should die and wants me to bring the exhaust note down to 84Db to match a uk spec cars exhaust note, 84Db, thats smart car stuff.

So my question is does anyone on this board know how to knock a few Db from the cars exhaust note without going down the Silencer road?

Just get your muffler changed out for a quieter one and drive responsibly so as not to hit any blind people.

Move to Indiana, USA.

As long as the cows don't mind, you could shoot a goddamned cannon out the back of your Impreza STI.

Joe, mooed

American cars as a rule produce far more torque lower down than most Euro/Jap cars so they need not be revved so hard.
I'd think most Euro/Jap Cars cruising speed on the motorway (70mph) is around 3,500-4,000 rpm.

Many States/Cities in the U.S. have mandatory vehicle inspections required to renew the vehicle plate. Most if it is about emissions, but a vehicle can be failed for several other reasons. Mostly safety and illegal modifications based on State laws.

In Japan, inspections are so severe that many people simply replace older vehicles with newer ones because of the stringent inspections and resulting repair coats.

Replacing a muffler isn't all that horrible in comparison.

Having bought an Japanese imported Impreza STI...

Japanese import exhausts are often loud, esp. if it's an aftermarket exhaust. IIRC, there are often exhaust-specific "bungs" you can buy for modded exhausts which you can fit temporarily to the car so it can pass the MOT. Once it's off the ramps, you can remove the bung/muffler and hey presto, you have your ultra-loud Afterburner back (or whatever's on your scooby).

A quick google reveals this example

Re: revs - I regularly redline (or just shy) my S4 which is around 7000 rpm IIRC (can't really remember, but it's high), esp on the shift from 3 to 4. It's lots of fun. Pootling around town in sixth gear, I think I'm around 1800 rpm (going from memory). Despite that high max of around 7000, it feels less revvy than my former car (a Honda Civic Type R) - that you really had to gun to the redline, becuase of the vtec system, which delivered more power in a pretty big "boost" effect above a certain rev (I think it was around 4800 but I can't remember now).

Sponge, bung/muffler. Meh, same difference. ;) A sponge would be cheaper. :shifty:
