My ringtone is me singing my own hot R&B number.
The lyrics are as follows:
<spoken with a sexy feminine type voice by me>
Somebody's callin' .. oh yeah
<drum beats in background and single note piano playing>
<poorly timed rap>

Maybe that's the problem.
For my main ringtone, I alternate between the nuBSGtheme, "Summer, Highland Falls" by Billy Joel, "In A Daydream" by the Freddie Jones Band, and "Say (All I Need)" by OneRepublic. I am also thinking about adding the opening to "Don't Fear The Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult into the mix.
I use customized tones for some specific people. "Amber" by 311 for my wife Amber, The Office theme song for my work, etc.

The theme from Dr. Horrible is my ring tone and Gene Hunt saying Fandabbydozy is my message tone.
I use the Galaxy Quest theme as my ringtone and have done for years.
I need a new text message notification sound though. I've been using Vader's "The Force is with you, young Skywalker", but it's just too long/obstrusive. I might see if I can find some lightsabre-clashing sound effects.

R2-D2 is your friend.
You could use Worf saying: "Captain, incoming message." It's rather easy to find on any Star Trek WAV site.
^ No, same problem as the Star Wars one I currently use. People text me at work because they know I can't necessarily talk as I might be busy. So I need something a little less "vocal" and shorter that isn't as distracting. R2D2 or a good saber clash (I've found a few that are possibilities) are ideal.
