There is a thread in TV & Media that is debating this topic.... can we talk about Star Trek in the fucking Star Trek forum?

 

What I find Ironic is that JJ and his team say they're telling the story of how the original crew came together, but by using the time travel/alternate universe aproach, they are in effect not telling that story, because the way they set it up, nothing's the same! I'll still go see the movie, and I hope it will be fun, but it wont be as good as the original show.

You're right......they don't know that this movie will be better or worse than the original show.. ...but they are taking an educated guess based on what these Hollywood blockbusters are normally capable of....which isn't very much. Of course I hope I'm wrong in this instance...but I agree no matter how good this 2 hour movie is it can't possibly compare or dare to be better than 3 full seasons of TOS.... I mean LOL now...let's not get crazy here !

 

Well to start off with, two of those people are dead. That kinda puts a crimp in things.

The rest just don't look anything like that anymore, and three of them hate the fourth.

I also will not be seeing this movie for a very simple reason:

I don't know any of these characters, and based on the teasers, I don't want to know any of them.

I'm also not going to pay Paramount for completely wiping away 40+ years of Star Trek. The same way I refused to pay them for killing off Jim Kirk. I've seen the crapfest they called Generations exactly once, on broadcast TV. I might watch this when it hits broadcast TV in 3 or 4 years. But that's a big "might", so don't hold your breath.

 

Granted, there's a small smidgeon of a chance that it could be as good, or better, but like ST-One said, based on what usually happens in such cases, and based on what we've seen so far, there's a 99.9 percent chance that I personally will not like it as much. The best that can be hoped for is that it will be better than the worst of TOS, but not as good as the best.
With the possible exception of the actors, and costume designer, the talent just doesn't seem to be there, but I hasten to add, that while JJ's team is certainly talented in many ways, they can't hold a candle to Roddenberry, Solow, Fontana, and Jefferies, etc. And the new teams controdictory statements on their 'raison d'etre' on several creative dicisions the've made, pretty much says it all (for me).
I actually envy those of you who like the new direction, and fully embrace it, I wish I could, I had high hope's early on. Hopefully the movie will be better than my worst fears, and I'll find some redeeming qualities in it.

But seriously now....is it? Can't we CGI stuff...I mean what they do today with the computer graphics and it looks so life like (sorry I don't know all the tech terms etc...)

But can't we do TOS season 4 w/ CGI crap...? TOS movie with CGI crap??? We can get other people to do the dead guys voices, that's the least of it. I think this is a great idea ...anyone else or am I alone in this one? Why do I have a feeling I'm alone....sooooooooooooooo very alone....

 

^^ They're getting close, but maybe another 5-10 years away... that being the ability to realistically material map one person's face on another in a video context. The trouble with old footage is that you don't have a complete 360 degree fixed axis video montage of the characters (especially the secondary ones) along with a full compliment of facial movements (e.g. everybody smiles differently). But it may be possible to interpolate enough to construct plausible facial movements. That's just the head... Then there's the complexity of bodies. You'd have to find a stunt double with the same body frame who can imitate the original actor's movements. Finally, you need a voice. I think that technology is even further out, that being the complete phonetic simulation of another person enough to construct new speech with the original voice.

It's a lot of work for the extent of people that would want to see it today... at least at this point. Who knows what may happen 20 years from now. Maybe there will be a huge Star Trek nostalgia wave and some enterprising movie industry people will make the attempt to create new episodes with believable facsimiles of the original TOS crew.

 

'Final Fantasy: Advent Children' was a pretty good example of what could be done at the time it was made, and that was relatively recent yet technologically enough time to make progress, so who knows how close they really are now?

Still, I find CGI movies like that a tad... unnerving. That's my personal issue more than the fault of the creators. CGI always has that effect on me, when I detect it.

I would hate to see a CGI stick puppet that happens to look like DeForest Kelley. If the man himself isn't available then recasting is the only way to go.

Also, I don't understand why some folks feel so threatened by those with differing opinions. I am thoroughly excited about the new film... but I understand that not everyone is going to feel that way. Frankly, my enjoyment of May 8th will not be affected in any way by those who choose not to see the film- just as their May 8th will not be affected by my enjoyment of the film.

There are a lot of folks on both sides who need to grow thicker skins.

I think a CGI feature film of TOS can work very well in the not so distant future. Just about most of the images in the new Star Wars movies were CGI and soon enough they will be able to reproduce actors as they looked when they were young. Look at wht they did in the Lord Of the Rings Trilogy with the character of Gollum. There is enough stock footage and voice recordings of TOS to create a computer generated feature film in the future and I can't wait for that day to come! Science fiction meets cutting edge CGI, I am sure the use of this future technology would be something Gene Roddenberry would have approved.

 

Esp. if he didn't have to pay the actors scale wages !!

"Courtmartial" served as a good example of what I like to see in science fiction and unless I get the sense that this is the kind of storytelling a SF will give me then I'll vote with my wallet and not pay to see it.

That said I cannot fully criticize a work until I have seen it, and so I will, eventually, through either a televised broadcast or a file-sharing download which happens to be legal here in Canada.

I have seen examples of TOS-R on YouTube and a couple of episodes on through download. I could buy the sets where I work at Future Shop on staff purchase. But I won't pay for them until they perhaps one day end up in a remainder bin for maybe five bucks. Overall I just don't think much of what they did in the name of "enhancing" the show's f/x. I just feel they took a totally wrong approach for such a project.

 

Out of honest curiosity, I ask, what would you have preferred? Remastering the film without redoing the effects?
