Trip had that annoying Southern drawl that I can't imagine still existing in his time period. ...

As someone from the south with a slight southern drawl I find that statement both insulting and disappointing.

Anyway, I think the accent adds a bit of charm and shows that society of that time has evolved from the days of degrading people for their heritage.

it is also an odd comment considering bones still has a southern accent.
by the way there isnt one accent.
as for the florida thing it is one of the places where the accents are all over the place any way considering the influx of people from all over.
who knows what it will be like in the future.

heck i live in tennessee and people from the south think i am from the north and people from the north think i am from the south or midwest..

I grew up in the south, but never developed the accent.
I'm confused... You grew up among the people with southern accent, but you never talked like them, or..?
Yes. Everyone on my father's side has a very southern accent. I'm not sure how I turned out different, but I didn't emulate it, even when I was young.

Again, I apologize for having been so rude. :( I've felt bad about that post ever since it was pointed out to me. I do believe in IDIC after all...

Ehhh. We are all guilty at some point of letting things slip out that we don't really mean. ;)

Back on topic, in addition to favorite regular or almost regular character (my pick was Trip), I'm trying to think of my favorite "one and done" character. My pick there is the Vulcan ambassador that they had to rescue after she completed her investigation into corruption. Darn it. Now I cannot think of her name.

My favourite character by far is definitely Malcolm, because he seems a very "real" person. He's shy, short, a bit geeky; he's not your average space hero type. When I first saw him I was reminded of John Hurt's character in 'Alien', (one of my favourite movies), and I could see he'd been cast because he looks like a thinker, rather than an action hero. Sometimes I think he's the only person on that Bridge with any sense.

I'm watching the Romulan arc and though he is not dominant in it, he is very good. Some of his scenes are critical. He plays them tense and sincere without being over the top. Overall I think his best work was in season 4.

Yes, I think he's basically the brains of the Bridge, with Trip as the heart and Archer as the soul.

Malcolm's input is critical. I like the fact that he's almost always under-stated and softly spoken, rarely forceful.

I voted for Trip. Personally I think the character was very poorly served by the writers. He was chief engineer on a starship but he was written as a stereotyped hick. But a superb performance by Connor Trineer made the character the most consistently interesting to watch.

I agree that Connor gives a really believable performance as Trip. I also agree that he's poorly written, as are all the characters. Drama thrives on obstacles and conflict; these people didn't face enough personal conflict on the voyage, just situational conflict from various bumpy-headed aliens.

Trip did seem a bit young to be a chief engineer, though. Wouldn't, in all reality, such a person probably be older to have all that expertise?

Trip and Geordi seemed like they were about the same age. I think Trip is written very much like Bones. Connor. I never thought he was a stand out in Enterprise. I thought, though, he did a nice job. All the ENT actors were very good despite being given crap occasionally by the writing staff (particularly T'Pol).

How so? They're both southerners, and hold a similar function in a triumvirate, but Trip was a nice guy, and Bones was a nagging cynic (in a good way, though).
When did you hear Trip say stuff like: "Damn' it John, I'm an engineer, not a _ _ _ _ _ _" or
"Space is a disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence"

I never thought he was a stand out in Enterprise.
He most certainly stood out, as a (male) character who showed the most skin, as a character who had more drama going on then any other regular (romance, angst, tragedy, he definitely cried the most, french-kissed the most etc.). Plus he was uber-cool.

Absolutely. Jolene did good, in spite of T'Pol being written as talking blow-up doll most of the time.

Yes, I suppose Trip and Geordi are about the same age. There's just something very youthful and innocent about Trip that makes him seem younger. I don't really see the connection with Bones because Bones was the grumpy realist, always bringing the idealistic Kirk back down to earth. However, Bones and Kirk are good long-term friends, as are Archer and Trip, so that's where the connection works well.

I guess Trip is the stand-out character because he's such a genuine guy and his personality is very accessible and likeable to both sexes.

Do you think all the Enterprise actors are good? I'd say most were OK, except for Travis, who I don't get at all. I can't think of one example where the character of Travis was interesting, exciting, moving, funny, sad, etc - not even one. He has no personality or presence whatsoever in my opinion. I wonder why they wrote him like that, then why they cast Montgomery, then why they didn't kill him off when they saw he wasn't really working out? It could have been pretty dramatic to kill someone in season one, like they did with Tasha Yar.

Fans of Archer, Hoshi, and Travis may not be online, populating the TrekBBS and voting in this poll at the moment, but they're around.
Archer and Hoshi do seem to have fans, but we've reached a nice round number of votes now (100), and there's still an ugly zero next to the name of our "favorite" space boomer...
Actually, on second thought, Sharon Valerii was my favorite 'Boomer'

You know what the irony of that is? Anthony has an absolutely fantastic personality. He funny, he's great to talk to and he's is a total extrovert. Why the writers didn't turn him loose, I will never understand! :scream:

Hmm, I started to agree with you, but I recall many episodes where Geordi pines for girls. Maybe the difference is he didn't pine on the job typically; he waited until after hours. Then again, Trip's Enterprise didn't have a 10-Forward.

Well, I have another thread on this. I will say not only are Archer and Trip friends, but a Vulcan interloper begins providing advice that Archer takes over his long-time friendship that is usually (at least in the first two seasons) logical as opposed to Trip's heartfelt suggestion.

I thought all the actors were good and feel badly that many didn't have a chance to get some meaty material. I mean, the most meaty material Hoshi got was to be a girlfriend to a medusa-looking dude who was telepathic. I wish the writers would have plotted out an arc for all the characters and allowed each one to have something "special" about them. For example, I would've loved if Hoshi found out she was an augment or at least genetically engineered/altered for linguistic enhancement. And for the Boomer, they rarely used his knowledge.

Then again, I think the writers had a tough enough time satisfying the big two or three (depending on your views) and writing them well.

Being a totally great extrovert guy doesn't make him necessarily a watchable actor though, does it. It can't be easy for him, as they give him nothing to work with, barely even any lines. You can still act without lines, though.

And he's a very cute guy. But I never notice Travis in that way because he doesn't seem to radiate any kind of sex appeal, unlike Reed, who, although less blessed in the looks department, seems to have some heady sex appeal going on and I often can't take my eyes off him. I don't think Dominic is always the best actor on the show but his character is believable at least, whereas Anthony is just, well, furniture most of the time, sorry to say.

I voted for Trip.

I was never a big fan of all the other Star Trek series (except the original, which I think most kids grew up watching in that era), and my initial reason for even contemplating watching Enterprise was because I’d heard Scott was on it having become a huge fan of his when he was on QL. But I’ve got to admit before Broken Bow had finished, I was hooked on Trip. I’d never heard of Connor before, no knowledge of his acting ability, but his character just jumped out of the screen at him. He was just so natural in the role, whereas I was actually watching Scott act although I’m not sure if that was a left-over of knowing his past character so well and having difficulty seeing him as someone else. Suppose sometimes being an unknown actor to an audience does have its benefits, no preconceptions.

People often say Trip wore his heart on his sleeve, but that was part of his appeal to me. And what you saw was what you got. I also never had any issues with his lovely accent, probably because my Brit ear wouldn’t know the difference between a Texan or Floridian accent. It just made his character stand out more for me and I definitely didn’t see him as a “southern hick” as some people have described him, to me he was just an affable, easy going guy. That he was also gorgeous to look at made the package complete for me!
