Your Box office Predictions for Star Trek? (and box office tracking)

Re: What are your Box office Predictions for Star Trek?

BTW, from what I understand, you either see this thing in IMAX, or you be Reticulan and take up cattle mutilations as a career.

What? No IMAX? Screw that, human! I'm off to mutilate some cattle!

No middle road, baby.

But there's no IMAX anywhere near me!! I don't want to mutilate the cattle. I don't want to!!

To all those people predicting some sort of huge rest of the world gross, it's a matter of fact that the last decent Trek film, Star Trek: First Contact only made 37% of it's worldwide gross outside of America.

Insurrection made the same percentage of total gross outside of the US, while Nemesis took 35% and Generations 36%.

The Undiscovered Country, a cracking good film, only took 22.7% of total gross outside the US.

If Trek Xl maintains those sort of percentages, a $100 million US gross + rest of the world wouldn't even get near to break even.

While the TNG movies were undeniably more popular, the above figures strongly suggest that the same people watch Trek films at the cinema, and that the films do not attract new viewers.

Now we all know Nemesis was shite, but regardless of how much I love Trek, if I was head of Paramount and saw the $32 million drop in US gross between Generations and Nemesis, combined with the debacle of Enterprise, a show which the fans turned off in droves, I wouldn't be spending any amount money on new Star Trek thinking I was going to turn a profit, let alone spending $150m.

Optimistically, I predict a $50-60m max opening weekend and an $75m first week, after which receipts will fall off sharply. Say a final $85m US, and with an optimistic 65% of $85m rest of the world gross, you're looking at about $140m worldwide.

Re: What are your Box office Predictions for Star Trek?

I don't think you are taking into account that new people with a track record of entertaining the general public are involved.

The general public wants to enjoy a heroic sci-fi action flick, and the elegantly simple Kirk/Spock/Bones dynamic will (hopefully) draw them right in.

So I think there is plenty of separation between past Trek movies and this reboot.

Unless it's Star Wars, when have the general public as a whole ever wanted to watch a sci-fi space movie?

A few right here.

Plus, you're also forgetting the action hero quotient, which Kirk brings, and the interpersonal dynamics (emphasis on dynamics) between Logic, Impulse and Humanity.

A $75 million first week is not going to lead to a final tally of only $85 million. That would be an unprecedentedly fast dropoff. Yes, sci-fi franchise movies are frontloaded, but this thing isn't going to drop off faster than Gigli.

Re: What are your Box office Predictions for Star Trek?

Less than TMP made....in 2009 dollars of course.

That would be less than about $360,000,000. The actual numbers may be quite a bit less than that.

Re: What are your Box office Predictions for Star Trek?

I have it at a $90 million opening weekend. $275 domestic. Trek's future depends on how much this film makes. what do you think?

It occurs to me that instead of it peaking in the opening weekend and then plunging the following week, the folk here could make a pact to not watch it in the first week, but to watch it in the second week instead, thus keeping it alive.

A more realistic pact would involve people here agreeing to see it only once on opening weekend, and then five times in the second week.

Uh...this would probably explain the fact that Paramount's foreign marketing approach to this is nothing like that of any of the previous Trek movies, huh?

I'm afraid I'll have to see evidence of your complete track record for successfully predicting movie box office before I can take any of this seriously, because your reasoning and supporting evidence is too flimsy to justify that.
