If Lucas authorized another 3, which Eu should it be based on?

The Thrawn trilogy is extremely over-rated.

Seconded.

Dark Empire. It's a more basic story. The main bad guy is the emperor and it fits in nicely with his "ultimate power"/"cheating death" stuff from the prequels, plus its a character people already know. Blowing up planets always works well on the big screen. Instead of running it Dark Empire - DE 2 - Empire's End, you could have Dark Empire as the general outline for all three movies and then just pick and insert parts from the other two into the story. That way you get the best of the entire series rolled together (in theory) and Luke's fall is more meaningful if its lasts say from the end of the first movie to the end of the third.

They made 2 parts of the third trilogy already, The Caravan of Courage and The Battle for Endor.

THey just need to make the third, The Ewoks Conquer the Galaxy.

I don't think the period between AOTC and ROTS has been explored enough. :p

Bwahahahaha!

If someone put a gun to my face and made me choose what to base a new trilogy on - I would probably pick something in the far past, similar to Knights of the Old Republic. (And PLEASE no Boba Fett's distant ancestor)

Canderous Ordo wasn't Boba Fett's distant ancestor. He was just a Mandalorian. Completely different clan and lineage.

Oh I know... I was just commenting on how Lucas and the EU tries to involve Boba Fett as much as possible. Even if it doesn't fit. :)

Oh, that's very true. Maybe he's trying to redeem himself for killing him off in the worst way he could think of. If he really wanted to do that though, he'd have changed that in the Special Editions and DVD Release. Fett's a cash cow for him, like everything else is too him.

To be honest, while I think there are some good stories out there in the EU, I'd rather see something completely new and different. Sometimes the entire Star Wars universe (barring Infinities) being one complete, unified continuity can be kind of annoying.

Very true. But that was the brilliance of the KOTOR games. It started over completely from scratch with freedom to do whatever it wanted, because continuity didn't matter at all. It was a breath of fresh air for the franchise IMO. Yet, it didn't invalidate anything.

Continuity did matter, and KotOR followed it well--the only thing it really invalidated was the super-primitive look of galactic technology in the Tales of the Jedi comics. I always thought that was stupid anyway, seeing as galactic civilization had already existed for 20,000 years by that point in time.

Well Lucas crapped all over Tales of the Jedi anyway...

KOTOR or X-Wing series for me please. If I had to go for an all new option, why not a Clone Wars style CGI series based between ANH and TESB?

KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC

A better Star Wars story than anything the prequels came out with.

QFT. To quote Game Informer Magazine "Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic got right what George Lucas and The Prequel Trilogy got wrong." It's the true heir to The Original Trilogy. Don't let anyone tell you any different. I can just imagine a scene where Canderous unties all the scattered Mandalorian clans and leads them into battle to save the day at The Battle of The Star Forge. Oh, I'm nerdgasming just thinking about it.

But there's a hell of a backstory to get through though. Which could be a problem. And they'd probably go with a male lead, much to the anger of female Carth fans. Which wouldn't bother me. I always preferred Bastilla as a love interest. It was how Padme and Anikain should have been written IMO. The end battle has more emotional impact if she's your girlfriend rather then just some annoying, preachy chick you have to put up with. Carth was too whinney IMO. He was so whinney infact they made jokes about it in the second game. Never a good sign. And Kate Beckinsale or Rachel Weiz as Bastilla = Win.

If they let Drew Karpshyn and Bioware write and produce it, it will be a classic. Those guys have the best story-crafting minds and attention to narrative I've ever seen. Just look at Jade Empire and Mass Effect. If Lucas does it, he will ruin it like he ruins everything else. He'll probably make HK-47 cute and loveable. He'll accidentally trip on a banana peel and slide into the Star Forge self-destruct button. After saving the day he'll say something funny and cute like "Statement: I wasn't going to let The Sith SLIDE OUT from under us again. Ta da!". *Shudder*

If they do a Thrawn Trilogy they'd have to recast. And there's a lot of stuff in the book that just wouldn't traslate well to live action, like Thrawn studying a cultures art to learn about their military mindset. And they'd have to hook up Mara Jade and Luke during the films, because it's a movie after all.

I couldn't have said it better myself. KOTOR is what the prequels should have been. It was grand , it was fresh, it was exciting, it had a believable love story/interest and Malak added that sense of foreboding evil/malevolance that was missing in the prequels. What an awesome game and awesome story. If bioware ever gets off its ass (unlikely), returns and finishes the trilogy you could almost do a trilogy based on the games, this time however instead of the trilogy focusing on the redemption of Vader it would on the redemption of another Dark Lord of the Sith.

Granted KOTOR II wasn't nearly as good but it still had redeemable qualities.

While I can see the argument in favor of Dark Empire, I'm not a fan of that idea. Dark Empire is the original master of the over-the-top abilities and superweapons. It's the root of the reason the EU is considered "fanwank" by some.

Given all the factors, I think a trilogy which tells the Yuuzhan Vong story---possibly incorperating elements of The Hand of Thrawn at the start, such as the Imperial Remnant/Republic detente---would make the most sense:

1) It would allow the films to go nuts with CGI on the Vong ships and characters.
2) Seeing the Remnant and the Republic working together is, let's face it, pretty cool.
3) Even casual Star Wars fans may have some familiarity with the Jedi Academy due to its inclusion in some of the games, so the fall of Yavin IV would have meaning, and the view of the Jedi as primary targets in the war gives the story a thematic link to the prequels.
4) The fall of Coruscant has to be at the end of Episode VIII. You know it.
5) The ages of the characters would be about right.

The correct answer is:

Which EU story can produce the most action figures & merchendise.
That's the one that will be made into a movie.

I agree.. a Vong series would also be pretty awesome. I also wonder why with the exception of shadows of the empire why video games have not also explored more of the EU. A flight sim game based on some of the major battles of the Vong war would be really fun.

Because "Shadows" has Lucas' approval as being offically part of his Star Wars universe, the others as far as I know aren't. His offical approval came by showing Dash Rendar's ship in the special edition of New Hope.

None, I'm not at all a big fan of what the books have done to the SWU. I think Lucas would be better off writing something himself set about a generation after episode six with complete disregard for the novels. I could also see something set in the KOTOR period, but again I'd want Lucas to be heavily involved. As bad as some people think the prequels were, they would have been far worse without his guiding hand. Say what you want about him, the man knows his galaxy. Of course I wouldn't be against finding another director.
