Are you worried about Conflicker?

So supposedly the uber-deadly Conflicker mutation is going to be upon us tomorrow.

Some are calling it the worst virus in history possibly created by enemy government.

Others are calling it an April Fools' joke of doom.

What's your take?

Nah. I'm good. Got my Linux live CD right here. Worse case, I'll be running Ubuntu again until I can find a legit version of Windows XP.

All I know is there is some kind of harmless file that sits on computers with some code in it that is activated by windows autorun. That, if you click on one of the 50,000 websites, supposedly you get redirected to one of the 50 infected ones and the worm is downloaded onto your computer. Then, every day, the lists of 50,000 and 50 is changed.

I have a second laptop purely for work purposes that I don't allow on the net because at times I handle sensitive material, and this one is about to get replaced anyway, so, I say, "Meh"

Actually, they say the best thing to do is to run a registry hack that disables the autoplay. Supposedly anti-virus is useless against it.

Also, it's been suggested that certain UNIX systems aren't entirely safe either. The information I got wasn't entirely clear. But this was on a Linux message board.

And because of this, it was also suggested that OSX isn't really safe either.

That is why some reports have it actually been created by a government or terrorist organization: because it shows no prejudice.

Then again, as JoeZhang said, there's also a lot of misinformation. So who the fuck knows.

I've been without antivirus for over a year . . . just reinstalled NOD32 (days until my license expires )
and the scan picked up nothing
I'm a careful browser . . . I've either got nothing, or I'm screwed . . .

I'm pretty sure if you're up to date one your Windows updates, you'll be fine. (Or does that just mean you can't catch it, but if you update after you get it then it won't help?)

I don't know since I'm all Mac-based, but I'm pretty sure that Windows users who keep up with the updates are fine. That's probably most people on this board, but not most people in the general public.

I don't know how it is now, but the last time I fiddled with it it was true as toasted turds.

I have nothing against Macs (used to own one), except for the general principle that thier "ease of use" strikes me as only being useful for people who know little to nothing about using a computer. Also, Macs may break down or develop problems less frequently, but when they do the problem is often something impossible for a semi-computer-savvy person to fix due to the all the guts and bolts of the software being generally off-limits behind a limited user interface, whereas with a PC it would be a snap. Apples and oranges.
