Question about A Singular Destiny

One "in-between" chapter in KRAD's Singular Destiny has a log from the Enterprise C.

How exactly was that supposed to deal with the events in the main story line?

It was supposed to give us greater insight into Zaldan political culture, and explain why the Zaldan government hadn't immediately reacted to the forged evidence against them to prove the actual facts (i.e., when lied about, Zaldans tend to get outraged and retreat inwards rather than seek to establish the truth to non-Zaldans).

What Sci said -- it was intended to give some background on the Zaldans.

Well, I've finished the book (apart from the epilogue). It's kind of got an anti-climactic finish. I suppose it's really just trying to bridge the gap between the Borg invasion & the Typhon Pact but if that's the book's only purpose, it's kinda long for that. "Is this the prologue or the posey of a ring?"

My alternate title: The Star Trek Kama Sutra: See All the Ways in which the Federation Gets Fucked.

That's kind of an anachronistic way of looking at it. It wasn't "bridging the gap" to the Typhon Pact series, because it's the book that created the Typhon Pact. At the time it was written, the plans for doing a Typhon Pact series hadn't even been formulated yet (to the best of my knowledge). Its purpose was to establish the new status quo for the Alpha Quadrant. Future books, including the Typhon Pact series, will explore that new status quo.

^Yes, but even then, it's more of an expositional book than anything else. There's a lot of describing things and a lot of finding things out but only brief, short bursts of things happening. It is interesting as a series of snapshots depicting the Alpha Quadrant post-Borg invasion but it never really coalesces into a full novel.

While Sonek Pran is an engaging protagonist, he doesn't have enough of a personal stake in the story. There are some cataclysmic family issues that he's dealing with but those don't really tie into the main story (except in the broad, thematic sense of emphasizing coming together in the face of unspeakable tragedy). Again, lots of nice little pieces but an underwhelming whole.

TBC, I'm curious how you felt about TNG episode "Family" that came right after the "Best of Both Worlds", did you also find it to be anti-climactic ?

^I see the parallels but I think Captain Picard had a much more obvious, satisfying catharsis in "Family." The whole episode is watching Picard & his brother glower at each other from across the room. Then, when it finally explodes, it's such a satisfying release. "A Singular Destiny" didn't achieve that same tension for me.

ASD contributes to the new status quo for Voyager as well, though not as overtly as it does the Typhon Pact.
