i voted no but i'm not thrilled with the options. by far the worst option though is the first one. ...but it comes across to me as "i don't care about the story, i just want that character back, it doesn't matter what she does."
i guess i would vote for "i don't care as long as the stories are good" but that wasn't an option, maybe because the person who created the poll is one of the people who voted for what i call the "i don't care about the story" option.
I don't think anybody wants a bad or boring story. I think we all want a good story. However, I don't particularly care if it ties into the current line or not. A good story does not depend on that in my opinion.
Had I been able I would have voted
"I don't care as long as the story is good" - as you so cleverly suggested.
Yeah, I have the same problem. I voted for the first one, not because I'm not interested in good stories, but because I'm not invested enough in the
current story being told to vote for the second choice. I want good stories, but my interest in Janeway as a character trumps my interest in the current Voyager books' storyline.
Maybe it's the fanfic enthusiast in me, but I'm a big fan of 'versioning'. I think there are a lot more stories that can be told with Janeway, and a lot of missed opportunities to explore her character. She's a Trek captain ffs - she's damned important to the mythology. So I'd definitely be in favour of a Janeway return in Pocket Books - or even varient timeline stories where she's not dead.
The dead!Janeway stories might turn out to be awesome - I've never bought a non-TNG PB, but I might check out Full Circle from the library. But they're definitely not the only good stories that can be told about her character after the return from the DQ. It's a huge missed story-telling opportunity for trek books to drop the character.
I suppose that's part of the joy of unpublished fanfic - there's more room for plurality. Actually, I think greater variation in possible canons in Treklit would be awesome. Since the books are a seperate canon-unto-themselves from the official canon
anyway. I reckon it'd rock to have multiple arcs with books that are internally consistent, but not hold all Trek books
en masse to a single continuity. There's a lot to be said for the story-telling potential of multiverses.
