Best 'Irish' episode

TheMasterOfOrion

What would you pick? Would you pick a Miles O'Brien ep from DS9, the stereotyped Irish in Up The Long Ladder, or Janeway's visit to the village of Fair Haven in Voyager or maybe TOS Shore Leave?

:rommie:

Where's my leprechaun smiley?

Ignoring the fact Scotty is SCOTTISH;) I'd have to go with Lieutenant Kevin Riley singing Kathleen!:)

How is Shore Leave Irish? Am I missing something?

Epic Wayne/QuietMan style brawl

Kirk destroys Finnegan

Finnegan even throws in a few michael flatley style taunts before getting KO'ed....or did he....I can't remember
actually I think Kirk might have lost that brawl !?

They are descended from the Irish and that's close enough. :p

No they're not. The Scots just thought they were. In fact the Dalriadans were a separate Gaelic people who worked their way up through Great Britain separately from the Irish Gaels. When they started trading across the water, they assumed they were related because the languages were similar. Archaeology has proved this wrong. The erroneous assumption was so strong it was taught in schools up to the 60s.

^ Damn, I'll never be able to wear my "The Scottish are descended from the Irish" t-shirt again. €19 down the drain. :(

It probably arose from the long tome interaction with the ancient Irish on the west coast of Scotland. Quite apart from its own Celtic line there was a partial decent from the nordic peoples via the Shetlands ect. I'm Glasgow born and raised. You didnt have to tell me the Scots were'nt decended from the Irish!

Let's face it: it was never likely. The Scots are clearly superior in every way.
Yeah, like how you beat us in the rugby on Saturday. I didn't even know you could win in rugby by getting less points than the opposing side, but now I know. :)

More recently than that, in the case of an Ancient Celtic Lit class I once took. 'Course, the instructor we had was actually a Mediæval French Lit guy standing in for the regular professor, so he might have missed a few updates.

Agreed: TOS's "The Naked Time" gets my vote as well.

That TNG ep with primitive-seeming Irish settlers, "Up the Long Ladder," seemed a bit insulting (though Brenna was fine).

Happy St. Patrick's Day, all!

Seriously guys don't make me go F-ing Braveheart of your ass!
So now were all 110% sure Scotty's not Irish, not even a tiny bit alien Irish like a tiny bit Presbyterian Ulster Scots Irish? I know 'ave some Scots in wee Boston and every year when dis festival of a day starts they Ah telt hevryone 'bout thae wee Grannae they got in Ireland even though she's nae from Dublin but a true Scottish lass.
It's a rerr day ta-dae for Starr Trik fans, so ah've got the idea of doing a green thread for Starr Trik.
So wi fans gits oot, n it wis a rare day n aw. A lot of green and celebrations 'cross da Globe.
Ye cannae jist come oot and say what's oan locally? what fun er drinks ye'll be havin'?
Dinnae get yir knickers in a twist lassies, dinnae wurry yer wee heids ya feckin sheep-shaggers! I'm pechin un pantin tryin' tae get this thread back on track.
We prefer piss-ups in our kilts! Tell yis one thing fir nowt though, when yer havin' fun you cannae but dae things taht make ye happier,
ok, yer all right! So our lad Scotty's not Irish, clearly not the auld Irish man but this here toopic was supposed to be fer de green celebrations in this here Star Trek, the celt dancers and the stuff of music an' drinkin'. Now if ye dinnae hurry up and Celebrate Patrick's Day ye'll get a clip roond yer ear. Noo pley thum pipes!

I'll go with The Wounded from TNG. That episode is the one which really defined O'Brien's character.

Exactly what popped into my head. O'Brien's heritage was used very tastefully there--you got a sense of what it meant to him, but without being overdone or stereotypical.

^ Basically any episode with some of Irish descent that doesn't devolve into useless stereotypes of a 'charming' Ireland set in small villages in the 19th century:rolleyes:. Miles Edward O'Brien was one of the most believable humans in the trek verse and the greatest Irishman in Sci-Fi history:bolian:.

(BTW today's Simpson episode was actually a very funny look at modern Ireland. Good on yer,Yanks!)
