How does iTunes work?

I bricked my laptop and iPhone in one go so lost all of my songs, which were admittedly, illegally downloaded. Now I've got my new macbook and iPhone I've decided to go legit and download everything from the store. My question though is whether everything I buy is registered to my account forever? For example, if I lose all my downloaded songs on my physical storage, can I connect my itunes account to another computer and download them all again to that, for free, with minimum hastle?

No, you can't do that. You can make as many copies as you want, you can actually play them on up to 5 different computers at any one time, but you can't re-download them for free if you lose everything.

Ok, but how come I can download all my previously purchased applications for free? Like SimCity and Spore? I thought it would be the same for music...

It's ridiculous that you can't redownload your songs, I hope they change this in the future. However you can buy non-DRM versions of the music now which means its not tied to your account and you can play it in anything.

Because music companys are total assholes thats way... Much like movie companys.. i.e. you mean even though i have it on VHS/BETA/CDI/DVD/BD... i STILL have to buy a dig copy for my iPod??

Amazons MP3 download service is pretty good. Good encoding, no-DRM effortless insertion into itunes and fairl cheap. :)

Thanks for the warnings guys. I no longer use iTunes to download my music. Only wasted a few quid on it so far...

If you have unrestricted pre-recorded video, you can get free software to convert them to put on your iPod. And any music CDs can be copied to iTunes to put on your iPod.

Handbrake is one that many use. Check it out.

I can do it using Ubuntu also.

A bunch of music I purchased on iTunes failed to download on to my phone and are no longer shwoing in the download list, however all of the songs are waiting for me to download in my iTunes account on my computer. Is there anyway that I can set them to download to my iPhone (where I purchased them) instead of to my computer? I can't get to my home computer that the phone is synched to for a few days and I have onver 100 purchased songs that I can't download as it would mean synching with two computers which is not possible.

In the scenario you describe I believe the only thing you can do is wait til you can get to your home computer or synch your phone to another computer (which is not what you want)

Sorry.
