Nice shots, Squggy. Hope the ankle heals up quickly!
Yeah, the VAB is gianormous! I had the good fortune of having an uncle in KSC admin during the Apollo era. I got "grass in front of the firing rooms" seating for Apollo 16 and the Skylab I manned mission (officially Skylab 2, but that is't what the patch said.
My uncle knew he'd be retired before the shuttle ever flew, so that last trip I got the grand tour! In addition to the oblgatory giftshop stop, my uncle took us out to the Mercury monument, LC 34, "KC" the alligator... he lived in the pond in front of the admin building...and the grand finale for a space bug bitten kid...Inside the VAB and the gallery of one of the firing rooms!
The crawler was heading into the VAB that day. Among the pieces of rocketstuff I got to lay eyes on included a Saturn 1B with a placard denoting "ATSM". Deke Slaytons ride.
In 2004, a temp job took me to Orlando. I went and took the paid tour including the Apollo/Saturn center. Their animated firing room simulation (actual Apollo era consoles though) took me back to spring day in 1972 when I watched brave men leave their home planet to set foot elsewhere.
I gotta get down there to see an STS launch!
Dude, it's just has to be cool to work at KSC.
