NHL 2008-2009 Discussion!

I'd be interested in knowing what Brian Burke is smoking...

1. Even if you're "rebuilding", that doesn't mean that you trade away a 29-year-old who's second on your team in scoring (Nik Antropov). And if you do, you get more for him than a second-round draft pick this year and a conditional pick in next year's draft.

2. Same goes with a 28-year-old who's third on your team in scoring and who's been playing with more fire in the last month or two than almost anyone else on the ice (Dominic Moore).

They may both only be worth a second round pick, but their relative worth to the team was higher, especially recently.

3. Does trading a minor-league defenseman for an injured goaltender (Olaf Kolzig) and an injured defenseman (Jamie Heward) who will both be free agents in July make any sense to anyone?

I get the impression that some GMs, Burke among them, think that because it's the trade deadline, they have to make as many trades as possible whether or not they make any sense.

Oh, and picking up Martin Gerber on re-entry waivers? Brilliant.

First, how many goalies does one team need?

And second, if you're going to dismantle the offense, just let Curtis Joseph and Justin Pogge finish the season splitting the goaltending duties. Maybe they'd fall far enough down that they'd have a good chance at landing the first pick in the draft. But no, Burke claims that he's trying to give the team a chance to make the playoffs... riiiight.

Everywhere I've heard says that Jokinen is a locker room cancer, but there's no denying his skill. Looks like the Flames, with their massive salaries, are figuring the time to win is now before they start cleaning house.

Hmm. Where O Where have I seen a Keenan team bring in a poisonous player, and thus shoot themselves in the foot?

Ah, Iron Mike.

Classic Oilers. You're in a dog fight to the very bitter end for your playoff lives, and you let yourself get raped by Ottawa. Fuck this.

Pens earned the first 5-0 road trip in team history, and are 8-1-1 under interim coach Dan Bylsma.

Also, :guffaw::guffaw::guffaw: at Ovechkin being unable to stop Crosby's first goal because he got his hand stuck in a hole. Try explaining that one to the coach.

Well he traded Trevor Linden away from the Canucks, and later didn't he bring in Messier?
who turned into nothing but a slug for the Canucks?

On the other hand Guy Crybonneau got canned! :guffaw:

Exactly. Keenan turned an under-talented but effective group, one that had gone to the finals not that long before, into a toxic situation from which virtually nobody escaped unscathed. Keenan is Bertuzzi's biggest fan. What does THAT tell you about the kind of locker room Keenan prefers?

Exactly, Keenan will be the downfall of Calgary, just you watch.

Peter Pocklington has been arrested for concealing some assets during his bankruptcy declaration. Ain't karma a bitch.

Too funny once a crook always a crook,
Gretzky had some real law abiding owners didn't he.?

Looks as if the Blue Jackets may make the playoffs after all.... but it's not done yet. And they ever tried awfully hard to give away last night's game against the Penguins. :wtf:

Mason should be rookie of the year. Dude's almost completely responsible for the chance at postseason play.

Columbus has built up a good team. Placing all the credit on Mason is a bit insulting to them.

And the Penguins take down the vaunted Tim Thomas and the Bruins in their 100th consecutive sell out.

You'd be at the back of a pretty long line on that one. Mason is why Blue Jackets mgmt felt they could trade Pascal Leclaire - himself a darned good goalie - away for some more help. I am not a hockey fan and I don't know a tremendous amount about the strategies involved. But it's very good to see this team on the verge of the playoffs and playing so well. There are good fans here who have supported them since Day One... and to see them rewarded is tremendously cool.

Marty Brodeur passed Roy, as if there was any doubt. I'm no fan of the Devils, but Brodeur certainly has earned it.

And, Pittsburgh scores with two defensemen going two-on-one.

Thankfully Marty Brodeur did this, Patrick ROY ( not ʁwa ) is a total fucking asshole.
the Habs should have never retired his number after the way he treated them. (and I really hate the habs).
Now I want to see Marty get the Shutout record, he only needs 3 to tie it.
