Things that would ruin it for you?

My first introduction to Trek was seeing the Motion Picture in the theater back in 1979. Needless to say I was extremely young at the time, and had no concept of what Star Trek was, but I still enjoyed the film. Although it was slow I enjoyed the visuals. The film provided a spectacular window into the far future.

TMP began Trek's second era; the first being TOS. TNG began a third era of Trek. An era which included DS9, Voyager and Enterprise. Due to it being stylistically different than previous Trek it took some getting used to. I can only imagine what fans of TOS must have felt when they first saw TMP.

With this new film its pretty clear Trek is entering a new era. The film will certainly challenge our whole notion of what Trek is, and will certainly take some getting used to. They are keeping a pretty tight lid on this one, so its hard to tell what to expect. With that being said there are definately a few things that could ruin it for me.

The first being shakey hand held cameras. For some reason contemporary directors are obsessed with carrying a camera around and filming scenes like an amature home video. Everything is shaking, the image is zoomed in too close and to add insult to injury they edit the film so each shot last less than a second. It's like a 2 and a half hour music video. I don't understand the logic of spending millions on special effects only to have the camera shaking around so much you can't tell what's going on. Get a damn tri-pod! Just film the scene and let the actors act!

Another thing that could ruin it for me is the angry captain syndrome. Directors of science fiction are obsessed with recreating Han Solo from the Star Wars films. Han Solo was not a lead character. He was a supporting character. He was a plot device whose sole purpose was to transport Luke Skywalker from point A to point B. He is not the type of character who can carry a story on his own. I hope they don't go that route with young Kirk. I don't know if I could except Kirk as a cynical loner.

The third thing that could ruin it for me is if the crew beam down to a planet and have a shoot out. I like my Trek set in space. The Enterprise is an amazing place; there is no need to beam away from it.

Those are my three major concerns. If they avoid doing those things, I think I might be able to enjoy this movie.

I want to hear someone sitting behind me in the theatre complain about the implausibility of building a starship on the ground.

Yeah, I was just thinking my answer would be "Seeing it in the same theater as _______."

*name withheld to preserve my nearly spotless no-warning record.*

Come to Portland. I'll promise not to use six-syllable words like implausibility.

At least look 'em up first.

Yeah, the only thing that could ruin it for me would be bad acting.

What, you're gonna start holding them to a higher standard now?

Realistically, at this point...nothing. We know enough about this movie for me to know that I'll enjoy it. The open question is how much. Will it be absolutely everything I'd like? Based on what we know now probably not. Will it be a great disappointment? Again, based on experience, that's unlikely as well. Between those two is a lot of open area.

Kirk making Captain too quickly.

I'm wondering how "settled" Kirk will be at the conclusion of the film. It's likely that he'll be Captain (however implausibly, but then Star Trek has never been plausible with regard to crew assignments and promotions, would make for poor drama ) of the Enterprise, but will he have the assured poise, the command presence, of the Kirk we know from TOS, or will he still be a man of rough edges to be smoothed in future films, like Bond at the end of Casino Royale?

In a fascinating example of synchronicity, I ran into a thread of similar intent on another board I frequent (http://tinyurl.com/dmkhrp), and in both cases, respondent #5 spoke for me:

"I've got more important things to do than try to get my final straws all laid out in a row."

You know that somebody, somewhere, will yell "JJ raped my childhood!" after they see it.

For it to break my bullshitometer like Nemesis did.

Style changes (ie, sets, ship, uniforms) I can take but lazy scripting, lazy plotting and overdone gimmicky camera tricks would drive me insane.

"150 million...FOR THAT??!" is NOT the reaction I want to have on leaving the theater.

If Spock or Captain Pike or both die then that would probably ruin it for me. I'm hoping this is an uplifting film...not a downer.

And I second the bullshitometer mentioned earlier...

Fifteen years from now, when I'm still posting here and still dissecting the minutae of the movie and debating just how good or bad it really was, I just don't want to suddenly have a eureka experience where how frivolous it all has been sets in. The pretense must be maintained!

If they call the VNP the Vulcan Death Grip. I would just walk right out of the theatre, shaking my fist at the screen as I went.

old man yelling at kids, we get it.

Things that would ruin this film for me:

Sitting next to a "fan."
No sombreros.

Well, that's it really..

I can't think of any specific Star Trek related items that would ruin it for me. There is nothing I "need to see" or "hope I don't see" from a Star Trek standpoint except that I hope the familiar characters act "in character".

Being that this is simply a movie, I want it to have the qualities of a good movie (interesting and consistent characters, thoughtful and [relatively] believable plot, fun to watch). If those qualities are missing, then that will ruin it for me.
