A Gene Roddenberry "Audio Cameo" I'd never heard

Esteban

Commander
Red Shirt
We all know about Gene Roddenberry's "audio cameo" in "Charlie X", where he "plays" the galley chief complaining about "real turkeys in the oven".

But I just heard him in "What Are Little Girls Made Of?". During the teaser, there's alot of bridge background chatter, and you can clearly hear his distinctive voice saying, "Communicator! We need more lines to the impulse deck!"

That's the only time I've ever heard that. We often heard other guys saying "gravity down to point 8" and "forward phasers, will comply", but that's the only time I can pick out the Bird's voice.

Now back to my regularly scheduled life.

Way to go, Esteban! I, too, had picked up on the Roddenberry voice-over in "Little Girls". Ever since stumbling upon that, I've been listening carefully hoping to find others.

Are you named for the crewman in "Shore Leave" who dodges the strafing fighter plane??

Yes, it's rather like Alfred Hitchcock subtly sneaking himself into one of his films, isn't it? I wonder if Roddenberry foresaw people like us combing through the episodes and taking such delight in discovering his little contributions?

No it was more like someone decided that there needed to be random intercom voices to give the illusion of the size of the crew, and then they just grabbed who was around and recorded a bunch of shit. You'll hear a whole lot of Majel Barrett and Bob Justman as well.

That's interesting. I never really thought of it that way, but it certainly makes sense. Just a practical solution when they were editing, I guess. I have often heard Barrett and Doohan's voices doing little sound bytes; I guess it was just something like that.

PS--I'm not a number; I'm a free man!

In fact most of these com voices were recorded for the second pilot and then reused throught the series.
