Reminder: New 'Wolverine and the X-Men" series starts airing 1/23/09

Re: Reminder: New 'Wolverine and the X-Men" series starts airing 1/23/

No, it doesn't work. A bunch of characters are far different. In later episodes, for example,
they meet Mystique for the first time, and Logan has never heard of Weapon X.

Oh, that's kind of a shame. It would've been nice to see a continuation of XME, even an implicit one. And since this is from some of the same people (mainly producer/director Boyd Kirkland) and has a similar look, it's hard to separate them in my mind. Not to mention that it feels like a continuation of something pre-existing, since the X-Men are a well-established team at the start of the show. It's odd that they'd do it in a way that almost seems to be leading us on to think it's a sequel series if they intended to make an explicit break. I'd rather they'd made it more distinct from the get-go.

Re: Reminder: New 'Wolverine and the X-Men" series starts airing 1/23/

So have people still been watching this? I've found the past couple of episodes less impressive than the initial bunch. The Storm-in-Africa episode perpetuated the usual Western stereotypes about Africa, that it's just a bunch of wilderness and hut villages rather than a vast, diverse continent with plenty of big cities. And it treated the continent as a tiny place, showing the Storm-generated storm vortex covering most of the continent when it only seemed to be affecting a single village.

And the Gambit episode was kind of routine, plus I found it disturbing that the X-Men are developing a power-suppression collar. That raises all sorts of moral issues I wouldn't think Wolverine would be comfortable with. I mean, a collar that worked for long-term use would be tantamount to the cure from Astonishing X-Men and the third movie, and it could too easily be co-opted as a way of keeping mutants enslaved (the collar symbolism is rather blatant). So I just didn't find that story point credible.

Is that Dr. Zane who hired Gambit a character from the comics? All I can seem to find on Google are references to this episode, though I haven't searched through more than the first few result pages.

I find I'm getting rather tired of this show's approach to female character design. Kitty is just about the only female character on this show with less than a D bust size. Even Amara, who looked like she was 12 or something, had a rather prominent chest. Now, I've got nothing against an ample bust here and there, but this preponderance of enormous chests is ridiculous and unrealistic and quickly gets tiresome. I don't like seeing comic-book women reduced to juvenile male fantasies with implausibly exaggerated attributes. It's sexist and silly. And this show takes it to an even more absurd extreme than most comic books I've seen. I don't think even Power Girl is as busty as this show's Emma Frost or Domino.

It's juvenile because it's a cartoon that's meant to appeal to young boys, the fact that adults that like the X-Men watch it too is just an added plus for the network.

I think we need to keep our feet on the ground and remember these are not made exclusively for us. They're made for our children and for us to enjoy it with them.

Re: Reminder: New 'Wolverine and the X-Men" series starts airing 1/23/

^^What?? Because it's made for children, that makes it okay to inundate them with images of huge-breasted, ridiculously sexualized women? Your logic altogether eludes me. If anything, the fact that this is expected to be seen by a younger audience makes the gigantomastic character designs seem even more bizarre. I mean, comic books are actually mainly read by adolescent boys, so catering to their unrealistic expectations is understandable, though far from admirable. But if anything, one would expect sexuality to be toned down in a show expected to be watched by children.

Wolverine's very practical, and, as a practical matter, many mutants can't control their powers at first (or at all) and need help containing it; look no further than Proteus. Makes sense to develop it, so long as it's not used without cause.

Not that I know of.

That view of Storm's former habitation is more or less where she's always been shown to have come from. An isolated rural area where the superstitious worshipped her as a goddess.

As to the episodes, the first few after the pilot aren't as impressive. Things start to pick up starting with episode 6, minus the occasional bland Wolverine solo episode. The Nightcrawler spotlights (6, 10, 15) are particular highlights.

Has anyone else had problems finding this? My TIVO got the first two episodes, but hasn't recorded anything since, nor can I find it when I search for it.

Yes, but that's the problem. Western media always portray Africans as primitive tribesmen, even though 40 percent of Africa's people live in cities. It's a stereotype.

I think parents are prefectly capable of desiding what they want their children to watch & what not to, so you don't have to. Besides, they've been putting bigger breasted animated women in cartoons since Disney's "Beauty & The Beast". Heck, even Fiona's boobs in "Shrek" were bigger than her head and nobody took issue with it because we've put aside those old fashioned ideas of seeing such things as shameful or vulgar.

BTW, you can give the African stereotype a rest. You're just being overly sensitive.

The same episode showed Storm's earlier career as a thief in an African city.

I'm sure the NAACP will make this their top priority.:guffaw:

I've started watching this on CBBC over the past week or so. 1pm weekdays, been recording them on Sky+. And looking at the episode guide on Wiki
- Here!
it seems us Brits are getting the episodes first. Oh yeah :)
Looking at that list I started watching at around episode 14. At first I wasn't impressed and kinda zoned out of a few eps (never a fan of bloody Mojo)
The concept of Wolverine in charge is still something I don't get. Externally I get it- "he's the most popular character so make him the lead" say the suits. But internally after watching a few more eps I don't get why Cyclops / Storm or whoever isn't in charge?

Anyway its gotten a hell of a lot better, episode 18 was awesome featuring massive smackdown between the X-Men and the Brotherhood against the Sentinels, and ep 21 which just aired today also had some terrific future Sentinel bashing.

Of course, I grew up with the 90s animated series, so this is never gonna compare to that in my eyes. But still this is a bloody fun show which looks set to go high places with the last few episodes, and is a lot more mature than I thought it would be
