Latecomer To This: JANEWAY DIED?!?

^^^ And ever heard the story of how the TOS was saved?
*Sigh* we just seem to move in endless circles. Leave Brit alone. Everytime we hear comments about Janeway staying dead we feel obliged to jump in and respond and on it goes, around and around.

You do know that all you got was an extra season right, they still cancelled the show, it was just lucky there were enough episodes for syndication.

The difference of TOS being saved and your save Janeway crusade is that TOS was the only Star Trek there was. The Star Trek fanbase is too fragmented and the Janeway sect too small to garner enough support to make a difference in this case I'm afraid. Why not spend your energy doing something really worthwhile like feed the homeless or save the environment. That would be a cause I could get behind you with but Janeway? Nope!

Yes -- a few million fans wrote actual letters on physical paper, put them in envelopes, attached postage, and mailed them to Paramount.

TOS was not saved by a couple dozen overgrown infants standing on a public streetcorner shouting at passing Gunsmoke fans.

:guffaw:And you know me so well to make a judgement about what I do or dont do?

guys, another reminder to keep things civil, or don't post. I'm || this close to lock these threads right now.

Thank you.

And what prey tell has been said that would warrant that? Seems like your threat is less civil than what has been posted so far. I say that respectfully of course!

But oddly, that very thing did lead to one extra episode of Misfits of Science, years later. No one knows why.

For example:

Right or wrong... what's done is done.

Nope, what's done can be undone at any time, don't kid yourselves. I am here to undo it.
Now that's comedy.

Wow. Seems to me that just the other day I said something about Brit's hubris. Truly amazing...

Brit

Good luck with that.

Just 3 of the 6 replies to one post. none of the above are necessary except to express some negative feelings about Brit's post. Normally, I don't bother comment on such trivial posts, because they don't go anywhere near flaming, but these threads are heated enough as it is, we don't need more fuel on top.

A couple of years ago, I've got people telling me, seasoned TNZ people, that they won't come into Lit because the environment here is too hostile. And this is the behaviour they're talking about, posters thinking one snide reply isn't enough until they also make one too.

If you or anyone else have any more problems with my comments here, please use the PM system to contact me, in-thread is not the place for moderator actions.

This behavior is also the reason there's the mistaken impression on TrekBBS that there aren't many Janeway fans. There are but they have other more civil boards to hang out at.

And I'd like to know where those are because I have yet to find one. Every board I have ever been on has opinionated people on it including those that have a lot of Voyager fans and nobody can tell me that Voyager fans are nicer than any other group of Trek fans. It's just not been my experience in almost 15 years of using the Internet.

I'm with you. I used to love the now-very-quiet Psi Phi bbs, where lots of people were very supportive and friendly, but flame wars have broken out there, people have stomped off in anger, never to return - and I have sometimes been accused there of having hidden agendas when I make posts. Ditto the Simon & Schuster bbs, and the Trek one on comicboards.

I frequented Psi Phi in the early days because I had an older PowerMac, which just couldn't handle aspects of the TrekBBS software, and when I finally upgraded I realized a lot of people had moved across to here.

It's bamboozling that people say they feel unwelcome on a new (to them) bbs just because they have different views to others, because the regulars here very rarely agree with each other. The fact that this TrekLit board exists to discuss licensed TrekLit means that someone who rarely reads licensed TrekLit is going to feel out of their depth when they start to contribute.

When we scoff at their protests, it's done the same way we scoff at any other contributor. How do you regulate things so that everyone realizes - at the same time - that we must be gentle with every tentative newcomer? Even someone with Admiral bbs rank might be a newcomer to TrekLit.

I've been to actual gatherings of ST fans and felt lonely and isolated all day. I've been to others where I suddenly became the life of the party. Often it depends on how I am feeling in myself that day. I can be gregarious and I can be shy. I can feel inferior in a group of new people, and I can feel self-confident. I find it's hard to predict how certain first-times will go. Isn't that human nature? Or is it my own personal quirk? I really don't know.

So an avid Janeway fan who's only read a few early VOY novels, but wants to come here to protest the death of their hero in a TNG novel (which they don't wish to read in the first place) is going to be hard pressed to feel truly welcomed even if we threw them a party! A newcomer has to be prepared that, if their views don't seem to be as popular as everyone else's, that they make have to be prepared for some disbelief and argument, or they many need to be strategic about when they drop their supposedly unpopular clangers.

We have lots of people who say they love TrekLit because we were so welcoming when arrived. And, as I said, the regulars rarely agree with each other. If Rosalind reckons some TNZ people (!!!) won't come here because they say it's more unfriendly that TNZ, then I'll hazard a guess they are people who haven't read any TrekLit in a looooooong time, and thus feel hestitant about how they might contribute. No shame in that - at ll - but don't blame us for their insecurities.

Well said.

And may I point out, that I may add a little here and there outside of here, but the vast majority of my posting has been in TrekLit because one I feel I can add more in here and two, the other boards are just not so welcoming to newbies.

Yeah, I was starting to address this, too, but ran out of steam. My favourite ST series would be TOS/TAS, TOS movies and TNG, and I tend to go to TOS, Movies, plus TrekLit and ST XI boards here the most. (ST XI is hilarious!)

I have been to the TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT boards often enough but discussions of things like "'shipping" - a term I'd managed to never hear before, in over 25 years of fandom until going into the ENT board that first day - just made me feel way out of my depth. I usually answer people's trivia questions, or add details the other posters don't seem to know about because they never read licensed TrekLit.

My first ten or so visits to each of the TNG, DS9 and VOY boards, years ago, ended up with people shouting at me that "the books aren't canon!" Well, yes, I knew that, but surely TrekLit factoids were still interesting to the questions they were asking, or the points they were making?

"No, take it to TrekLit", they'd say. But what would be the point of doing that? The TrekLit people already knew those factoids? If and when someone asks, "Whatever happened to...?", and the series never answered that question in the first place - but a novel or comic did - why was it then not correct to mention said novel or comic event? :guffaw:

So, yeah, my first impression of the dedicated series-only boards here were that they were very unwelcoming, and I still tend to hand out here more than there. But, as I said, it's just as much my fault that I felt uncomfortale there. When communication fails, it usually means that both sides could have improved their game.

I do think it's important to make newcomers feel as welcome as possible, but when they come into a forum and their first post is meant to clearly be controversial and raise trouble why should they feel welcomed? Respect is "earned" and not a given. Regular posters get to know each other to some degree and are able to disagree respectfully and when snide or snarky remarks come in none of us take it that seriously. If a newcomer is offended I would say the fault lies mostly with them because they need to spend some time getting to know the regulars. I frequent here and have for years. I was a lurker for a long time and even when I am posting it's with times of frequency and then not at all for months sometimes.

Also, if you're going to post your opinions be prepared to defend them and don't be surprised when others take a complete opposite view. It doesn't make your opinion less valid unless it doesn't hold up in the light of deep scrutiny. If that's the case then maybe it would be wise to humble yourself, as I have seen many around here do on occasion, apologize and move on. Nobody is going to look down on you for that. At least I hope not!

Message boards because of their very nature will have conflicts. The job of the moderator IMHO is to not let personality conflicts arise and interfere with the course of discussions. Along with their other monitoring duties.

When I first started visiting here and on Psi Phi boards I used to think that Ian (Therin) was an obnoxious know-it-all. Once I got to know Ian and his posting style I came to quite another opinion about him and now I see him as an enthusiastic fan who has a lot of knowledge he is willing to share without prejudice or respect of persons.

To me the Janeway threads have been entertainingly amusing and given me a lot of laughs, and for that I'm thankful. But truthfully on many forums to come in as a newbie and start such threads would have been considered trolling and I'm glad that the moderators have given some leeway about it.

If you're one of those newbies to the forum though please do not take things personally. You might try hanging around for a while and get to know some of the regulars. I have found most of them to be great people.
