Dukat and Damar...

When Damar killed Ziel, why did'nt Dukat kill Damar, he had every reason to do so. Ziel did help sabotage the station, however, she was still Dukats daughter, he did love her, and Damar was his suboardnant. IMO he had every right to kill Damar then and there, no questions asked...

I think it was more that Dukat was horrified to watch his daughter die and it was the final part that caused him to become unhinged. His daughter died in his arms.

I always liked though that they didn't just ignore this and it came back up in the sixth season finale with Dukat telling him he forgave him.

This always struck me as a major fubar of the series. If he loved her, she should have killed Damar right there. Blaming the Sisko for Damar's act of murder just adds insult to injury about how ludicrous of a fubar this is on the part of the writers. This is the one (and probably only LOL) point that I agree with regarding "ConfusedMatthew's" whacky DS9 reviews.

Dukat was always unstable, his Cardassian sized ego got in the way of his common sense. Notice that when Dukat next meets Damar he blames Sisko for Ziyal's death (because he ruined dukat's chance for Glory, cost him his Empire and his most valued procession, his Daughter).
I use the term procession deliberately, because in my eyes Ziyal was seen by Dukat as something that belonged to him. That's why he lost it completely; he had lost the only person who truly loved him.

Also, Damar didn't really do it out of pure hatred or malevolence. He was doing things the way Cardassians do things: He executed a traitor. Since Dukat has those same beliefs ingrained into him it makes some sense he'd project the blame onto Sisko.

On the other hand, by Cardassian standards, Damar did his Duty. Traitors Die. I think Dukat could respect that and found it easier to transfer his rage to the Sisko.

^ That was pretty much the way I read it. Cardassians (except for Garak, of course - who was exiled) could do no wrong. Dukat was just egotistical enough to rationalize blaming Sisko.

Dukat also became even more crazed as the series went on, to the point of stealing the Pah-Wraiths in the last season for one last grab at power. He probably didn't even remember Ziel by that point.

There is no way of knowing what has been going on in Dukat's messed up mind. Lol.

It would have left the plot in a mess though, with both big-hitting Cardassians out of the picture. One of the best things about the endgame was Damar's redemption. This whole storyline would not have been there.

Off topic; am I the only one who found Ziyal irritating, self-obsessed and stupidly naïve?

Count me in on the 'Dukat not blaming Damar because of Cardassian beliefs'.

I liked Ziyal to a point. I didn't hate her, though I did strongly dislike her "relationship" with Garak. I didn't cheer when she died, but I didn't shed any tears either. I did enjoy the reactions of all the characters that cared for her, a great deal. I especially like when Kira is sent to help Damar with the Caradassian resistance in the final arc of the series, and she tells Sisko that when Damar killed Ziyal that it was like Damar had killed a member of her family. I think that for Ziyal's few appearances (I think she appeared 6-8 times over 3 seasons) they got a lot of use out of the character, and that her appearances and death were handled extremely well.

I'm glad that Dukat didn't kill him at the time. Otherwise we wouldn't have gotten the Damar of the final episodes, who became one of my favorite characters; something I hadn't thought possible. Of all the deaths in the finale, it was Damar that hit me the hardest. But if Dukat had killed Damar in the finale as justice for what Damar had done to Ziyal - that would have been acceptable to me.
