First photo of phaser prop...for real this time.

Eh, I've worked with stainless steel handles before and never had a problem
with them being wet or sweaty. Besides, it's only stainless steel to us in the
real world, in-Universe it's more than likely a much lighter, more durable
and sweaty-palms-resistant metal.

And it's not fair to generalize an entire audience as dumb because a visual
que is given to them as to what going on with the weapon. Plus come on...
it's a hell of a lot cooler than having him twisty a little knoby.
This is entertainment after all.

Not sure about the spinny barrel, but I like the overall design aesthetic.

:techman:

The leaner and meaner Star Trek. I liked the old dials and buttons. I like it better than digital technology. I hope the bridge is not all digital. For some reason, I hate that. Digital watches went out years ago. Somebody please tell me we are not going to see the tapered 'hunched' Enterprise nacelles. That is the only thing that I'm worried about. The rest is alright, and not a too big bridge. The phaser is cool, spinny barrel or not. Next movie can always circumsize it. With TT anything is possible.

Welcome to the Internet.

It's what we do.

The more devoted the fans, the less respect they seem to have to folks who don't share their fandom.

I've got to tell you, I'm finding that the RPF people are really knowledgable and greatly talented - and some of them are so flatfootedly insulting about those things and people that they don't like as to make TrekBBSers look humble and openminded.

They definitely look tapered, which is fine by me it looks cool.

But they aren't hunched, that's an optical illusion. ;)

It has been confirmed.
Star Trek will have both digital watches as part of the uniforms and the tapered "hunched" nacelles for the Enterprise.

Sorry.

Well I'm glad I can be devoted to Trek and see it through alot of my
friends eyes aswell. We're in no way any better than the "General Audience"
is, we're simply nerdier.

Most the people I know that don't like Trek or only have a passing interest
in it are leaps and bounds ahead of most the people I know who do like Trek
when it comes to intelligence and common sense.

They can have their twirly barrel.

Another thought, with the spinny barrel - could you lock it sideways and shoot out a stun and kill blast at the same time?

Whoa, reading this... are people totaly getting this wrong?

The way I pictured it the barrel spun like it was a six shooter.
Clicking it over a notch to change the setting.
Not an actual rotating of the barrel sideways.

In that case I'm gonna feel hunched for weeks after I see this movie. I hope the ship looks like your picture. w long nacelles. The phaser is fine. Any slight changes in the future won't even be noticed TT or not.

Hmm...

I looked at it and saw it pivoting sideways. Thats what I didn't like about it. The silver end shooting out stun bullets (;)) and the red end shooting out kills :D

But I'm seeing the six shooter now.

No, I think you were right the first time. And that's what is so silly about the design.

It's fine for what it is, I guess. It has a Flash Gordon look to it. Kinda clunky and over-designed. Also, it could've been the phaser design from TOS and it would've fit in. I could see it under glass at a TOS memorabilia exhibit as a show phaser, and I doubt anyone would bat an eye. Whether that's good or bad -- . Eh.

Overall, it seems that the design elements of this movie are all over the place stylistically. It looks like old technology compared to the bridge, for example. Hell, maybe it is supposed to be. Still, I think those price scanners on the bridge should've been the model for the phaser. ;)

It could go either way to be honest. I'm seeing both now they've been pointed out.

Welcome to the RPF, where we recreate props exactly as they are, and you cannot change them. Ever. Or the posse will get you.

(Side note: one of the people I quoted in another thread here gave me permission to do so, but commended that he wasn't fond of the TrekBBS because the people here "tend to eat their own." Makes me wonder how long he's been at the RPF...)

I liked the old dials and buttons.

I see at least one button and one dial on this phaser.

But in the future, everything is digital.

...but a lot of the detail was either poorly thought out or is outdated now.
The Model 1911 pistol is rather old and 'outdated' too, but is still a pretty effective weapon. There are quite a few 'modern' weapons that have been largely the same for decades.

I really don't mind them making some changes to the props, I just don't think most of the changes to the phaser could be called 'improvements', merely differences. A non-reflective finish and textured/non-slip grip would have been improvements, but of course weren't included.

Not what i expected, i was expecting a cleaner look, somewhat like the ship and other equipment. Although it could be an antique or, well, from any time really.

Looks cool though, its the first metallic and multi functioning looking, rugged look since TUC's phasers: http://www.eagerplastics.com/phaser.jpg - http://propdept.home.comcast.net/st6ph.jpg

Its different, which is good. It also retains SOME characteristics of the TOS phaser.

I like it though.
