Why do people dress this way?

Clothing with anything written across the ass. It's bad enough that teenage girls are strutting around with objectifying labels stamped on their asses*, and it's kind of sad when it's her mom, but c'mon. I've seen 10-year-olds running around with "Juicy" scrawled across their butts. What the fuck is wrong with people?

*This look is generally completed with Crocs or some ridiculous parody of a flip-flop. This compounds the fashion infraction.

I really wish people on the whole would dress a little better when out in public.

We don't have to dress in suits and tails and to the nines and all of that but at least dress decently. Wear clean clothes, look nice, put on some damn deodorant, look like a member of society.

I went to a Boat Show this afternoon and there were a couple of people out there who looked like they just fell off a boat... in the Caribbean... 6 weeks ago.

I mean it's not a high-fashion even, for sure, I was in my work clothes (black slacks, white shirt -slightly unbuttoned, wife-beater underneath), but look like a damn member of society!

You're in PUBLIC.

Trekker4747:

I'm with you on this. I guess it's too much to ask for people to be dressed neatly. Myself, I tend to dress on the preppy side -- button-down shirts, khakis or other casual slacks. Because of my former full-time profession -- business journalist -- when I dress up, I have plenty of suits and matching accoutrements to wear. On more casual days, during the winter, jeans and a Henley shirt is OK with me.

I wish more men would subscribe to GQ and watch Tim Gunn. They need to! A well-dressed man should have at least one or two blue blazers, a few French cuff shirts, and a handful of non-traditionally colored ties -- I wear a number of those in the purple family -- amidst the more staid red and navy blue ties.

The only trend that really still bugs me -- and fortunately, I'm seeing it less and less -- is guys with their pants down below their underwear. C'mon, guys, that style started in prison, so free yourselves of it!

College girls who wear the rattiest sweat pants tucked into Ugg boots?

Really, I always thought of it as an act of minimalism. Also, college style has changed from yester-years. I heard that 20+ years ago, it was common for students to dress in jackets and ties to class. Then shirt and ties. Then just dressy shirts. Now it's common for kids to roll out of their pajama bottoms and hoodies. Which I think is fine... I think I went to class in my college hoodie and basketball shorts a couple of times. As for sweats and uggs, sweats slip on easy, and uggs keep your feet warm. So let them be...

As for fashion styles I dislike... my answer always changes as I grow older. And really, I'm no longer one to judge (on some Zen-philosophy) because getting visually offended is all in the mind; and I'm sure that regardless of how nice I think I'm dressing, someone out there probably thinks my entire style is weak, and vice-versa...

But really, guys wearing skin-tight girl jeans... I'm still not accustomed to it yet. I need more time for my mind to adjust.

edit: Going along with "I think I look nice but somebody else thinks I look stupid", a clear cut example would be early 90's style. As a kid, I thought this style was SO FRESH! And honestly, with the streetwear trends of today, I wouldn't mind seeing it coming back. I mean c'mon, how rad is this?!?!

Uggs are also disgusting and deserved to die...along with crocs. They make peoples feet look ginormous.

Was a teenager in the late 70's --

in 1979..it was like a collective "Dear God WHAT ARE WE WEARING." came over men the flared pants and bell bottoms went the way of the dinosaur..

Since that time, I haven't changed my mode of dress much.. nice shirts..slacks when appropriate ,good shoes.. my step-daughter Meggie often wears Uggs when it's cold outside but no other time..mostly she tries to be sensible..

I'd guess those people were most likely in work clothes. Work on boats is inherently messy. Or by boat show do you mean one of those ones solely featuring overpowered shiny penis enhancing frozen snot boats? Cause then I'd understand why you'd be surprised at their appearance.

I don't know what Ugg boots are, but I wear sweat pants, and there's certainly no stereo type of being a bum if you where then here.

Ugg boots are traditional australian sheepskin boots.

It was a show with different boats dry-parked in a convention center that you walk around looking at and in.

This might have been true of strict Bible colleges and some of the more socially awkward engineering schools, but everywhere else college class attire has pretty much been "anything goes" since about 1967.

This "scene" thing annoys me, which is basically just Emo 2.0. With their skinny jeans or neon leggings and their fringes on the cusp of total world domination :klingon: They're all unique. Just. Like. Everyone. Else.

I present my evidence (courtesy of a Google for "scene kids"):

In fact, I'm not a fan of any fashion which vaguely resembles something from the 80s. It was a dark time for all of us.

</rant> :p

[Disclaimer - Apologies to anyone who dresses like this. I'm sure you're a nice person beneath all the hair dye and eye liner :)]

It's sad that I'm old enough to remember when a "scene" was a music scene and not some stupid "be seen" fashion "scene" where all the supposed cool kids hung out.

I dunno, it seemed like everyone I knew in high school who went to shows in Cleveland was a complete dork who spent their meager allowances and paychecks on rare 45s and test pressings than eyeliner and trendy clothes.

I think I'm just getting old. Gonna be 30 this year. :(

You are younger than me and I don't remember it like that - we spent money on looking good (which I'm sure looks stupid to modern eyes) and trying to pick up the opposite sex.

I missed the eyeliner but had plenty of "trendy" clothes - I was young, I wanted to have fun!

The young should never worry about what the old think.

Sweatpants are ok when you're running to the store or something fast, but when I see girls with their make-up done up and stuff and in sweatpants or pajama-y pants I just roll my eyes.

Pajama pants can be hot sometimes, especially on a girl with some kind of curves. They don't work for really skinny girls. But if she's got a nice round ass, sweatpants and pajama pants cling to all the right places.

I guess I missed that memo when I was an undergrad. Maybe in the 50's it was common, but not the 80's.

I knew two girls who I could tell what time their classes were by what they wore. Early classes = sweatpants/tshirt/sweatshirt/hair up/ no makeup. Later classes = hair and makeup done/ skirt and top/ jeans.

I did get in a bit of trouble with them when I asked them about it, though.
