Star Trek comics preview released

Do we know if the TPB will be available in regular bookstores?

It'll be available everywhere the other IDW omnibus volumes are sold. And maybe more because it's a movie tie-in.

Forgive me if I hope for something more from the characters of Star Trek than the dialogue of your average idiots at the mall.

Even the villains?

Well, if you're going to steal, steal from the best.

Hahaha! Then it comes under the heading of "homage".

About the comic, I have to say I'm probably far out of its intended demographic, so my opinion probably doesn't count.
What's the intended demographic of the comic book? And if you don't think you're part of that group, then what are you doing here?

Let's just say I doubt very many comic books are sold to, or aimed at 48 year-olds. If so, then I'm dead wrong.

Okay, I'm only 34 so I'm not quite as old and curmudgeonly as yourself ;), but I do admit I'm probably older than many of the folks here and certainly older than the intended demographic of this new film (which is blatantly going for a younger crowd, let's not kid ourselves). And, while I don't read a lot of comics, when I do pick something up at the shop, I certainly don't go looking for a label on the cover telling me what age it's intended for.

I agree the examples shown don't look like high-art, but I've learned that comics are different medium and even within that medium there are some artists that favor brevity and some that favor walls-o-text. I've learned to look at the whole thing and put it all together to see the whole story.

At the comic shop I visit to play Magic:The Gathering, the owner looks a few years older than me, and he seems to be up on his comics, so there's got to be something out there for folks of all ages.

Because so very many people talk that way.

True, but on the other hand, must they always be quoting Shakespeare, too? People swear. And, in my experience at least, the more comfortable they are around each other, the more they do so.

The dialog in M*A*S*H was pretty good, but they had to get around crusty Col. Potter's language. So, here's a sixtyish WWI cavalry man saying things like, "Bull feathers!" And, "Horse hockey!" And, "Mule fritters!" Creative. But not very realistic.

I don't know, Potter also seems like a downhome, Presbyrterian (sp?), family man, so I can buy him reining himself in, esp around younger soldiers and the female nurses.

I do agree with the general idea though, that too much of Trek dialogue is so forced and unnatural. You never hear them stumble over words, or mis-speak and correct themselves. That quote above from Marina Sirtis sums it up nicely IMHO.

But what if the character dipicted is supposed to be an idiot?
George Carlin is not an idiot. Nor is Lenny Bruce or Louis C.K. or Richard Pryor.

I think this quote from the late George Carlin says it best:
"The word shit, is an interesting kind of word in that the middle class has never really accepted it and approved it. They use it like crazy, but it's not really okay."

Interesting - in the middle image of the comic preview at www.trekmovie.com, the artwork incorporates a graphic display created by Rick Sternbach for “Solaris” - it’s the complex circular diagram just to the right of the viewer which is showing the disintegrating planet or star:

How does it go... "theft is the sincerest form of flattery"? Something like that, anyway. :D

By the way, why does it seem we all believe making the language more realistic and conversational means injecting colorful metaphors?
I know for a fact we don't all believe that.

I suppose what seems 'realistic' depends on who you hang around with and what you like to hear.

"immitation is the sincerest form of flattery" i believe.

The artwork is completely different than what I expected from seeing the trailer.

And like others have said, Nero doesn't seem so diabolical here, even caring about his crew.

With a name like "Nero," I figured he was a former Romulan emperor, especially since one of his cronies is referred to as a general (Ayel). But the comic insinuates that he's nothing more than a mining ship captain. He doesn't seem to have any chip on his shoulder, or particular grudge against anyone. Then again, we don't know why he was put in prison, how long he was there for, or what happened to him while he was there.

Anyone ever consider that the Romulan is actually a failed rapper that goes by the name "Big Boy?"

Jumping into this conversation late, I have to agree, the dialogue is horrible. "No time to explain big boy, just get your ass up here!" That makes me cringe and writhe on the inside. Oh, people are actually getting paid to write something that awful?

does anyone have any idea when this comic is going to be released? i've gone to a number of comic book stores today and not only does no one have it , nobody seems to know when it will be coming out!

Issue #1 is due in January, so to have it in stock over the next few weeks they'll have needed to have ordered it three months ago from the Diamond Orderpak. If they don't have the record of ordering it on their computer, it won't be coming in. "Star Trek: Countdown" #1 was scheduled to arrive in stores on January 14 from IDW Publishing.

The next three are due February, March and April, with the compilation omnibus in May.

I'd be making sure they plan to order the omnibus, which is probably in the current orderpak, or ask them to order back issues (reorders) of the four separate issues. The orderpack should be on their front counter. It's a thick monthly catalogue.
