Amateur Comic Artist looking for a Writer

Joaqin

Hey there,

I am a big fan of IDW's star trek comic series. I would like to try and create a star trek comic as a personal project for fun. I am a decent artist and hope to keep the comic art rather simple. I am a fan of all series of ST, and am currently working my way through DS9 (Almost half way through season 6). The only stuff I have not seen yet is all of TOS and the cartoon.

I would like to team up with a writer who maybe already has a short story ready to go with some dialog and action for me to draw into about a 24 page comic. Ideally this writer will live close by to me (Baltimore, MD) and be able to communicate with me when I have random questions (such as costume design or environments).

I am currently studying for the MCAT exam (Jan 30th) but afterwards plan on attacking this project full speed.

Please email me with quick story synopsis and any other info you would like to share if you are interested.

Thanks!

I have questions and comments:

-Why does the writer have to live near you? If you're ready to recieve synopses by email, aren't you capable of receiving the story itself by email? And can't you send your questions and comments by email?

-Which era do you want the story set in? You'll have to pick one, because...

-The more complex the story, the more complex the artwork will have to be. So how simple do you want to make it?

-In comic terms, a short story is about 6-8 pages, not 24.

-And speaking of comics, you probably don't want somebody to just send you a Trek story in prose format, because to do a comic right you'll end up rewriting it anyway. You need a page-plot format or a scripted format for the whole story, with each page having it's own blueprint.

I'm tempted, but I'd like a response to these things before I decide.

I'd be willing to assist the eventual writer. Not really sure how to write a comic book type story, seems like it would be really different then I'm used to. But I can come up with some good idea's from time to time.

Hey there,
Yeah I guess it would be a nice bonus to be able to drive somewhere close by and hang out and sit down and work on some drawing with the writer near by but beggars can't be choosers. So yes, email only will be fine.

I think I would like to start with TOS era since I would like to emulate the style of the artist from Star Trek: Year Four (Steve Conley). It has clean lines and solid colors which would be quicker, but still gives a nice feel. I could do the same characters from the series, or new characters/new ships if good descriptions are given.

How complex? I would like to do something approximately 22 pages of actual content, and the front cover and back section editorial with maybe an interview with the writer and I. I guess it would be the length of one episode.

I am only looking to work with one writer, not a team.

Thanks for your responses :)

I'm very, very tempted! I don't have anything written, though, and my story picks up in mid 25th century, about 100 years after the end of the Nemesis timeline.

I'll shoot you a message if I write anything... :)

Okay, so my next set of questions:

-You said you could do the TOS characters depicted on screen, but do you have a preference? Pike and crew, Kirk and crew or someone else entirely? I ask because it will probably be more fun for you to do all the drawing if the story centers around characters you like. (I prefer Pike myself, but all I'd have to do is type.)

-If you choose my idea, how do you want it sent, plot format or script format? With plot, I basically give you a synopsis of the page and you decide how to depict it. With script, I basically tell you what to draw along with the dialogue. The benefit of the former is it gives you more creative freedom. The benefit of the latter is that I'm essentially composing the page for you, saving you a step.

Kirk and crew! I would eventually like to try doing Pike too though, didn't even think about him.

I am really up for any ST series though. If you have something already written for TNG or DS9 or voyager or ENT, whatever! Let me know, I am up for it all.

I think for now I would prefer the latter, (a prepared story and dialog) as I imagine that is how many comics are done today professionally.

I know. Most people don't.

All my Trek fic is posted here:

The stories in the category "Star Trek: Other" are my reboot Trek series starring Pike, but there also a few ENT stories as well.

In most cases you'd be right, but the most notable exception is Marvel Comics. They invented the plot format and still use it today.

If you see anything you like among the fics on my fanfic page I can convert it to a comic book script, or I could make up a new story. Up to you.

Thanks for the reply Admiral! I will check out your stories and let you know.

Hey Admiral2, I sent you an email to your juno account, but haven't heard back. Are you still using that email account?
