TrekBBS "I Love the Eighties!" music video special

With my av, it has to be done-

In 1987 Huey released this, Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think I their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square," a song so catchy that most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself.
Huey Lewis & the News- Hip To Be Square

"In Too Deep" is the most moving pop song of the 1980s about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.
Genesis- In Too Deep

Respect.

Yeah, you had me with the "seriously good music" bit, right up to the bit where you go and mention Chris de Burgh... :p

Just for the record, I love Total Eclipse of the Heart. It was used to great effect in Old School. Here's another of my favorites from the old days.
Clarence Carter - Strokin'

Good call.

Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_Mg8m49vSM8

Haven't seen that in years. :techman:

Another oh-so-80s band that has to be mentioned is Yello:
"Oh Yeah"

That's SO Ferris Bueller ;) A great 80s film.

That song appears in SO many 80s movies. :D

I think its best use is in Michael J Fox's Secret of My Success - his aunt is teasing him from the back of the limo he's chauffering and he's getting all hot under the collar (they don't know they're related). The music just works perfectly. Found it on YouTube! :D

My picks:

Rush Hour - Jane Wiedlin Chick in LBD with neon bows down the front, playing with dolphins? HAS to be the 1980s... :techman:

St Elmo's Fire - John Parr - Brat Pack goodness, 80s+++

Love in the First Degree - Bananarama Ah, Bananarama, I could watch you forever.... :adore: Check out their other videos too; Venus is also a winner, as is I Want You Back. Video picture quality is a little disappointing though. You really need them in vibrant technicolor! :D

Manic Monday - The Bangles Well I can't include Bananarama, and not include equally gorgeous Bangles. :D

Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles - well, it seemed appropriate for a video thread!

:bolian: Now there's a woman after my own drumbeat-generated, audio-sampled, tone-synthesised, beat-matched, pitch-shifted, royalties-evasive heart. [Careful now, don't breakdown just yet... - someone]

Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers
... which I used to hear as "She's so floppy eared" when I first heard it.

Actually, that one makes me feel like having a Duff beer. ;)

And Sorry ZR, 'Bake a pretty cake' isn't on my list.
I'm sure I'll find a way to cook something up (by the book of course) to rectify that in due course. :p :bolian:

For now, I'll throw in some Dire Straits into the mix: the famous "Money For Nothing"
- and no discussion of Dire Straits and the 80s would be complete without mention of the Local Hero music. :adore: :adore: :adore: :adore:

St Elmo's Fire - John Parr - Brat Pack goodness, 80s+++
Speaking of local heroes... it's Worksop's favourite son! (and Doncaster's adopted one) :bolian: :bolian:
Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles - well, it seemed appropriate for a video thread!
The first full video on MTV! :D

:) Remember that other one s'express did?... superfly guy I think it was called? I preferred that to the theme.

Also coming to mind this minute...

Bucks Fizz - Land of Make Believe
Feargal Sharkey - A Good Heart
Black Lace - Superman

and some children's song, something about a lion

Two pages in and still no ELO love (or hate)? ;)
MUCH love for the ELO and fellow Wilbury Jeff Lynne here :):

"Twilight" and "Secret Messages" are two of my most-played ELO stuff. :bolian:

Speaking of the Wilburys, George Harrison has "Got my mind set on you"....

The 'Twilight' video is awesome. But I have to ask, were ELO ever cool?

Also, was there a video for 2095? If there was, it doesn't seem to be on Youtube. That song is simultaneously the most hilarious and terrible thing I've ever heard.

...
I met someone who looks a lot like you
She does the things you do
But she is an IBM.
...

She's only programmed to be very nice
But she's as cold as ice
Whenever I get too near
She tells me that she likes me very much
But when I try to touch
She makes it all too clear.

She is the latest in technology
Almost mythology
But she has a heart stone
She has an I.Q. of 1001
She has a jumpsuit on
And she's also a telephone.

 :guffaw:

Is she called A.L.I.C.E?

I vaguely remember that one, but then again the 80s were a bit of a blur to me, complete with a huge yellow smiley face. :)

Ah, here it is: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=HuI0dLKK2P8 :)

[slaps forehead] Damn! No mention of the 80s would be complete without the madness that is Madness!

Some of my favourites: "Baggy Trousers", "It Must Be Love", and my personal favourite, "Wings of a Dove" :guffaw:

And I can't believe no one's mentioned this yet-
Europe- The Final Countdown
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZkllM8znx4
I'm gonna blow my speakers with this one!
Awesome poodle-hair classic! :klingon: :klingon: :bolian:

St Elmo's Fire - John Parr - Brat Pack goodness, 80s+++
Speaking of local heroes... it's Worksop's favourite son! (and Doncaster's adopted one)

I'm from the Doncaster area, so it's safe to say I've heard of The Northern Mullet Man Of Inoffensive Rock. He used to play the working men's clubs up there for years before he gobsmacked everyone by becoming a star in America - how did that happen?

:rommie::rommie:
Another local hero, Phil Oakey teaming up with Giorgio Moroder:
"Together In Electric Dreams"

But I have to ask, were ELO ever cool?
They were never cool. That's why I still love 'em. :bolian:

This thread is rapidly becoming legendary. :techman:

It's the magic of the 1980s, baby! Like Ronald Reagan said in his 1986 State of the Union address:

"Never has there been a more exciting time to be alive, a time of rousing wonder and heroic achievement. Where we're going, we don't need roads"

(hmm, catchy line. Wonder where he got that from? ;) )

:techman:

Ah, the 1980s... an era when Tom Cruise starred in some great movies with good music...

Maria McKee - Show Me Heaven

Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone

Beach Boys - Kokomo

Video Killed the Radio Star

Appeared on TV in 1980 as the first video showed on MTV when they went on air.

I know the song is from 79, but I throw it in the 80's since thats when it got put on MTV in the #20 spot and, as I said, their first ever video. Kind of an ironic choice really.
