FALLOUT 3 - discussion thread

But I was trying to be open minded about this and maybe give it shot. Then just yesterday I'm reading some reviews on Amazon that apparently the game is very buggy. A LOT of people were complaining about freezing and other various bugs (talking console version here folks.) I've seen few comments about freezing in this thread and I'm kind of wondering if this is common or just bad luck with the console versions.

I'm Level 16 and 40+ hours into the game on my X-Box 360 and I haven't had any bugs or freezing.

Thanks, that's good to know. I've kind of gathered that the PS3 version maybe runs worse than the 360 version. I've got both consoles now, and while I typically buy multiplatform games on the PS3, if I get this one, I'm leaning towards the 360 version.

By far my fav gun is the "Terrible Shotgun" fix that baby up with repair skill and you're doing 75 damage a shot. Super Mutant Leaders die with one shot to the head & it's easy to repair using other shotguns. Good times.

Just FYI: Sometime later this month Bethesda is releasing new Downloadable Content (DLC) for this game. It is going to be a new, relatively long mission called Operation: Anchorage. Supposedly it is going to be a simulation ala the Tranquility Lane mission within the regular game, except a lot longer.

The idea is that your character finds a simulator that was set up by the military roughly 200 years before the game's current time that simulates the Liberation of Anchorage (Alaska) from the Chinese that occurs in the 2070s in the Fallout universe's timeline. You get to play a US soldier fighting the Chinese. I believe there is going to be a system where you can give orders to other fellow soldiers.

Bethesda is also planning to release two more DLC packages, one in Feb and one in March. I am not totally sure what the plot of the one coming out in February is, except that it is called 'The Pitt' and takes place in the ruins of Pittsburgh, PA. The third and final DLC package is more of an expansion to the game's plot, where you get to play as a member of the Brotherhood of Steel in DC (I think as your current character). It is titled 'Broken Steel'.

Thanks for all the advice. I finally found the dang museum now I am running around it looking for the danged dish and getting killed by the super mutants everytime I turn around. I thought I had it on easy, but I must have this thing on hard because it is hard as heck.

What is the best way to kill these super mutants? I usually try to pump as many bullets as I can into them. The VATS system sucks because when I use it it misses most of the time. Is there some level up I need to do in order to shoot more accurately in VATS?

Right now I am near some rocket exhibit in the museum where I have killed two mutants, but a third one is killing me over and over. I tried using the minigun, the hunting rifle, heck I even charged him with a board with a nail in it, but he keeps shooting me to pieces. I am also out of stimpaks and pretty much everything else I need to stay healty. I do have some beer and a couple of pieces of rat meat. I might run back the way I came and grab an arm out of a gore bag I found and eat it.

I would actually like to find this dish and hook it up for the radio guy since I have spent the last 5 days hunting for the museum, but I am at the point where I might just quit and go find something else to do in the game.

I used to have a lot of freezing and crashing on PC version, turned out to be a hardware problem on my computer, a faulty RAM slot.

There are few perks that increase the accuracy and/or damage in VATS - Commando, Concentrated Fire, Gunslinger, Sniper. Everything that adds action points is good too. I usually try to aim for the head ...

Try taking Psycho before you charge them, it adds damage. Also, try .44 Magnum if you have one, I find them pretty good against mutants.

Finish the Survival Guide quest, if you haven't done it yet, it will take to some cool places and will raise a few levels.

-Shotgun to the head works well against Mutants. Even Assault rifle or Chinese Assault rifle work well. Again, use VATS and go for head shots.

-The radar dish is attached to the rocket on display large room.

-Drink water from toilets and sinks to get health back. It's unlimited in supply and gives you quite a bit back. Sure it is radioactive, but you can drop the rads with a radaway later. Only a minute or two of drinking toilet water will get you back up to full health.

Thanks for all the advice. I finally killed the mutants and got the danged dish. Now I gotta find my way to the Washington Monument. I got my health back up after I found a water fountain (I didnt know you could drink toilet water!!!). I also checked my difficulty and it was on normal so I dialed it down to very easy. I was able to kill four mutants and didnt die once.

I managed to find a stealth device in the museum. Does this thing help you sneak past enemies? I havent used it yet. I want to explore the capital, but there is some battle going on in front of it between mutants, some robots and scavengers. I tried jumping into it, but got killed a bunch of times so I gave up.

You may want to wait a while before going to the captial. That place is a warzone all throughout. The only really big reason to go in there is to kill a behemoth (which if you have trouble with regular mutants, this one will own you) for the achievement/trophy.

Another good reason is to install the dish and hear a decent radio station when you wander the wasteland. The ramblings of the president get old very fast.

After that it's better to do something else until you reach high levels ...

55+ hours in and there's still a shitload of stuff to do and almost a third of the map unexplored. Man I love Bethesda, buggy ass code and all. Hit the level cap last weekend. Viva DLC!

The Stealth Boy, yes it does. But its effectiveness still depends on your sneak skill. But it only lasts one in-game hour and it's a disposable item (although later on in the game you tend to accrue loads of them).

Yeah, it'll re-open the game world for your current character...

...changing the ending slightly to do so.

Can't wait personally. I'm holding off on completing the main quest until all the DLC is out and I tell ya, it's taking some willpower not to fire through it.

I've been playing around with the GECK and I made myself a 44 magnum smg shotgun
I have to keep playing around with the power so it's not at like 600 dmg! :D

at some point I want to figure out how to make my own weapon model

Well I managed to make it to the Wash Monument and install the dish. I also managed to kill a few supermutants. I did make it to the capital and fought my way in. Once I got in I saw a battle raging between scavengers and supermutants. I was hoping if I started shooting at the supermutants then the scavengers would be nice to me, but all that happened was they all turned their weapons on me and I quickly got killed. Since I was low on ammo and everything else I hightailed it out of there. I am now trying to find my way back to the radio station. Somehow I am behind the capital buliding. I managed to kill a bunch of supermutants (although there are three I ran from) and some of those doo doo spitting mutant things. I ran into a robot and some scavengers behind the capital and they killed me.

There is some dude talking over a loud speaker spouting nonesense about a giant worm coming for him. I figure that is a hint some huge worm is lurking around, but so far I havent run into anything.

Anybody know how to get back to the radio station? I keep running around the subways, but I cant seem to find my way back.

How do you fast travel? I did hit a button once and it said I couldnt fast travel, but since I didnt know what it meant I ignored it. I am at Dupont Circle now and still lost.

Look at the map, press the location you want to travel to and press "yes". You can fast travel to any location you have previously visited on 2 conditions:
1) You are not in the building.
2) You don't have any enemies near you, means you can't escape from a fight by fast-traveling.

I know this thread is pretty free form, but I am going to put this question in Spoiler Code just in case...

Does anyone know what the deal is with the one Satcom tower being held by Talon Company that has the launch codes for the orbiting missiles? I saved my game and then launched the missiles which was fun to see them streak out of the sky and lay waste to the surrounding countryside, but then I re-loaded my game and didn't launch the them because I didn't know if I would need to use them later in the game for something else. Does anyone know if you need to use them later? Are they part of a quest?

Thanks for any input.

Yep, I have been walking everywhere like a moron. Thanks for the fast travel advice. It has helped out immensely! Right now I am fighting a bunch of dudes outside of Vault 112 (at least I hope I am near it).

They do nothing important AFAIK, just the fireworks ...
